Have you played or currently playing a tank that has developed a reputation for being good/bad but in your experience it has exceeded expectations or failed to live up to its reputation?

I recently completed grinding the TVP VTU, a tank that has become a bit of a meme on the forums and statistically, with the exception of the M4 Rev (which is s still a hand tank), it is the best best tier 8 medium I have played. I achieved a 53.03% win rate over 132 battles with a WN8 of 1916.31. At one point I had the win rate at 56% but my final grind session went tits up and it fell to 51% before I recovered.

I do acknowledge that I am a better player now than I was when I failed miserably in things like the M26 Pershing and T-44, but I also played those tanks in the old MM while all of the VTU's battles were in the ''new and improved MM''. In one stretch of 50 games I counted 5 battles with tier 6 tanks and yet the tank held up.

I took the advice of the better players around the forums and played it with the stock turret and 88 mm gun. I also never upgraded the engines because it is a waste as those engines cannot be used on any other tank.

Funnily enough, I find the semi-stock Skoda T50 (free XP'd the middle gun) to be way worse in more punishing MM. I'm talking 42% bot win rate here. The autoloader better fix this mess as my T54E1 finished with a 62% win rate.

Played OBJ 263 on CT a good long time ago and thought it was a good TD so decided to grind to it....

Wind forward 12 months or so.

SOB that I am I grinded the wrong line and ended up with OBJ 268, had read somewhere or other it wasn't very good.

But it's an absolute blast, I really like it:)

Another was IKV 105, think I free XP'd past this one but went back to give it a go.

Fully upgraded to top gun and unless you use premium ammo it's rather useless, even then it can't pen at times, but use stock gun and fire HE it's a giggle.

Mind you to hit moving targets is challenging.

I find squinting out of left eye, close right one, stick your tongue out of right side of mouth gives you a better chance of hitting these....

T-43, very solid.
Chi-Ri, an totally awesome gun.

SU-100M1, fun and fine tank.

IKV-103 also a fine and fun tank. But hard to play.

SU-100M1. It tricked me into the line by being relatively decent. The true suck only starts at tier 8.

The Chinese premium TD. People said it was borderline OP, but I keep getting my [edited]kicked in it.

The Sherman Jumbo. People said troll armor and derp gun were really fun, but it never worked for me. Loved the M4 derp and the T20, but never got long with the Jumbo.

The T-28. People kept saying the KV line was great for beginners, but the T-28 is pure torture in the hands of a newbie. Enormous, soft and super fast to get you killed in no time.

the tanks i thought were awesome:

A-43 is just OP imho

i rather liked the Chi-Ri

the Hawk (t8 german LT) can outspot almost everything while remaining unspotted while active

MT-25 not as good as the T50-2 that came before but still awesome

VK36.01 that konich gun made it awesome (don't really know if it still gets that gun)

tanks that are "meh" for me:

hellcat .. i just couldn't get my head around that one

hype-59 .. my first premium t8, my most played tank, but this thing is just meh

T54 and T55a .. after a while just boring tanks

You spoke of being a better playrr, and I think that yes, your level of gameplay is a key.

I didn t like the IS when I grinded the IS3, and I bought it again 3 months ago to M it, and it was done in a few battles, finding it pretty good.

So maybe you better detect how to use the main  forces of the tank than before.

Another point is that you develop a personal gameplay that pretty well suits some tanks more than others.

I have no patience, so I will suck with swedish tds.

VK 3002 D is one of the best mediums in t7.
m3 lee is great.
Pershing is trash.
Škoda 24 is the worst tank ive played.

I have better damage per game in some tier 3s than in the t67.

I grind one tank at a time and so if a tank dont agree with me, i just keep on playing it until i start to better perform in it and learn its style which so far has proved to be very useful and works :)

I played it with stock turret and 88 gun because that is the best configuration for it. The top gun only has 6 degrees of gun depression and the 105 is far too derp.

The best way to play it is either in skirmishes or in team battles, don't play it in randoms because it's not a good tank for that mode, it's terrible against tier 9 and 10's, more so than most other tier 8 tanks.

Here is my detailed review on this tank from when I finished the grind:

I dont have that many tanks yet but every tank that i heard is OP and i have is also OP in my hands. And im not a spectacular player by any means. And since its about reputation there are plenty of tanks i was told were really bad but i liked a lot and i really dont think they are bad,

KV-5 <3 beast of a tank. love that thing.

Type 59, great tank. like any other tier 8 med apart from it never sees tier 10s.

IS-3 Trash tank. terrible armour for a tier 8, with a trollish gun.

T26E5 pretty meh armour, gun misses fully aimed shots all the time. low alpha, and DPM isnt everything

I did the same, and even then you are just the tier 6 premium on tier 8 with an 88 gun. So it's still terrible, but more workable. The stock Skoda T50 was punishing indeed. And makes you see all it's flaws early to prepare you for the clip gun. I had a sub 50% WR on that early grind to until I got the clip gun. 59% now.

But as for tanks rep vs my experience?

Well Chi-Ri is still in my garage, after 468 games. I even have over 350 games in the Churchill Gun Carrier. As people underestimating it to name one makes it more interesting. That and everyone yoloes you since it's a rare sight, as people want their UK expert badge. SU-85i as everyone said not to buy it, and now it's one of my fav tier 5 prems. Archer is another one with a bad rep. And the one I've enjoyed the most on that line. And the Swedish Leo. Everyone hated it. And it's the only Swedish tank I constantly go back to. 66% WR in it atm. As it's a great scout even mid to late game unlike the Comet.

I seem to have a habit of being terrible in tanks that are referred to as overpowered.
Examples:
T29
Hellcat
T67
T-34-85

It's probably because I don't play to their strengths, but if playing to their strengths means that I enjoy playing less then I'm better off sticking with tanks I enjoy more.

I seem to do better in tanks that either go too fast or too slow. Give me something in between and I'm less able to adapt to it's playstyle.

All in all, with the exception of some of the newer over armored beasts, I think it's more the player and less the tank that determines the outcime.

Hi!

> Tank reputations that did / do not match your experience

By a large margin my worst experience was the T-54. 2.5-skill crew and after 200 battles with 2nd best hit rate of all tanks, it got 40% WR  . As if I'd actively try to fight MY team.  When "gold" ammo became available for silver, I loaded 80% gold and gave it another try. In 400 battles managed to get its WR on the level of an average bob.

Top-tier battles aren't a stuff for me. :(

The Japanese superheavy line

O-I, O-Ni etc

Everyone says "OMG so OP nerf plox", but I find them to be the last one to the front line, left behind when it's over run or moves on, number one target for arty, too big to hide behind a rock, zero camo, awful traverse and depression.

And frankly it doesn't seem to pen anything half the time, yet everything can pen you.

I've had Steel Walls in lots of other tanks, but I don't remember ever getting one in an O-HO

Oh, and nobody told me the Swedish line was utter shite, because it is in fact, complete and utter shite, even with a 3 skill crew.

I have a worse than a bot win rate of 38% in a Lago for example, yet I can manage 56% in the same tier Hetzer.

Even in the universally hated M3 Lee, I did 11% better than in a Lago.

That is truly "Jar Jar Binks" levels of epic shite-ness

Meanwhile, Russian tanks need a buff apparently, good job WG

and thanks for the HD AMX40 model, we were all waiting on that one...

Recently IS with the 100mm gun has been a blast. Improved gun depression, DPM accuracy and gun handling while still retaining respectable alpha.

Type 59 was.. a pleasant surprise. There is nothing really wrong with it, but nothing really that great about it either. Well, except turret armor.

Type T-34 was better than the Russian T-34.

Played a few games with T-44 in recent weeks, the tank is just fine. Can't understand why WG wants to buff it. Oh wait its Russian.

T28E F-30 is among the most OP tanks in the game, I thought it's just a meme tank.

Hehe, I played the old T-28 with 85mm gun in old days for fun. :) Its crew ended in my T-54.

FV4202 at T10 back in the day. Liked it much better than I thought I would.

Low top speed and bad turret sure, but great engine power, strong UFP and low profile.
