After shooting i believe the barrel heats up and its supposed to keep it hidden better against thermal vision.. Sorry bad english..

You can likely google it if youre more interested. "Thermal sleeve + tanks" ?

CAX gun also has some, it's just wrapped more tightly and secured with proper fittings. No idea what the real life purpose of it is.

Could be supposed to be camo' wrap, but I reckon more likely to be an equivalent of the thermal blankets a lot of tanks (okay, certainly NATO tanks) wore in the 70-date...

I know all the Chieftains I used to see as a kid* had them, and the Chally's and Abrams in the desert all have them...

I believe the idea is to stop the barrels distorting in hot or cold conditions, or from the temp' differences induced by firing, thus reducing accuracy IRL...

In game? Just cos it looks more interesting, I guess...

*Because the Chieftain was a REAL tank, that made it into service and everything... Just sayin'...

This. As thermal sleeves is mounted on most "modern" tanks in the game. Inc the British high tier meds. But thermal cloth was a thing too. As the US did invent thermal cameras for military use in the late 40's based on the infrared electronic camera the British used for AA Defense in the late 20's. As thermal cameras back then were.. basic at best. And not really improved for wide use until the mid 70's iirc. So it did not take much to cover things up vs those. That and when in cover it simply breaks up the profile. Much like a wrapped sniper rifle barrel did back in the day. Tho if that was the idea here IDK.

Tho as for JCTagger theory on cold and hot weather conditions. No idea. Tho I would like some reading on that if you have any links for it? Never really thought about it that way.

Thermal imaging came in much later than this tank. May have been for accuracy due to temp changes in barrel after firing and initial Bore sight calibration, but more likely just a cosmetic thing for ingame graphics.

Crude thermal shield?  Makes it so the barrel won't warp.

Fire many rounds.  Lets the barrel cool evenly.  If it is not there and it rains out the top of the barrel cools faster making the  get a curve.

the "cloth" on barrels is for keeping the gun at an even temperature so the gun doesn't warp, for ex if the sun shines on the upper part of the barrel it heats up and expands causing the barrel to droop down thus messing up the gun alingment.
