The problem starts with defining "stock tank" in technical terms. What actually makes a tank "stock"?

 

Then 20 games (or any fixed number) is a completely random number. In lower tiers one can unlock the next tank in less than that, in higher tiers you're gonna need that much just to unlock the tracks. And of course better players / premium accounts would benefit more from it due to making more XP in those X battles (on top of making more FreeXP as well to unlock modules directly), while your average F2P account would still have to suffer from being put in +2 games undergunned.

 

As others have mentioned, stock tanks as top tiers are bad for the team, and matching stock tank vs. stock tank also won't work great as the handicap differs for each tank (also depending on definition, see first point).

 

And last but not least, it might actually turn out to have the opposite effect of what you're intending: People get used to their preferential MM and are hen shocked when their "protection" ends and they'll suddenly see +2 matches constantly (more tinfoil hat theories about rigged MM incoming)

In general, tanks with few researchable modules have higher XP costs for unlocking the next tank, so the total cost for unlocking a tank is about the same. And most tanks added/rebalanced over the last years already have only a minimal module tree, compared to the old tanks from 2011-2013 or so. However the newer techtrees tend to have less shared modules, so you can't cross-research stuff anymore.

 

Basically you want WG to reduce the XP costs in general - not very likely.

That's what premium tanks are for, grinding that free exp to prevent having to play a stock tank.

We used to have one until WG improved matchmaking in 9.18 kappa

It was also very exploitable by throwing a bit of money at the game.

Buy a tank, convert exp, fully upgrade it (or at least upgrade the important bits), enjoy being top tier fully upgraded for x battles.

Forget about it, how will WG force stat lovers to purchase free XP.

There are lot of tanks stock useless even in own tiers, and absolutely pointless in +2 MM... but hey, who cares about stats, he will be willing to handle creditcard to wg, and thats the point.

Not to mention some tanks which are even fully upgraded useless in +2.

Not to mention that I really think there is something in MM to put you in bad teams stock, and near finishing unlocking next one... on many tanks, stock grind was mostly 20-30% games, then middle was normal, and then about 20% before finishing tanks, MM again started to give me about 5% wins.... subtle forcing you to use free XP
