Some time ago,I made a thread with the exact same title, but with a question mark in the end.

Now, the doubt has been cleared. I don't like admitting it, but the "too long; didn't read" is true:

Unicorns were right.

Feedback about SH and CW

Well I dont quit now about your points, some are true but here is how I witnessed the changes from my clans perseptive:

(CWs did not even really change at all. Its the same old same old - Same old problems and nice features)

However what happened with Stronghold battles (Skirmishes and Battles for Strongholds)?

Well before the changes last year the stronghold feature was unfair. Bad clan would frequently face good ones. Their chance to take them down was low and I can see that being frustrating.

Then WG tried to fix this injustice, however did not get rid of it but just made it look different. Now the good clans are treated unfairly:

Everyone is competing for the same things. Since you will get the same rewards as bad clan fighting other bad clans there is no advantage any more to actually be good. Everyone gets the same. So why even try to become good, or better than others, when that does not offer any advantage?

Stronghold advances:

Well something needed to be done. Most clans enjoyed their boni from the maxed out stronghold by hiding behind defence times in the middle of the night. WG changed that and made the advances / battle for strongholds quit a bit better no doubt. While more might have played this mode suddenly it also lost a bit of its appeal since there was nothing to be lost any more. The "thrill" was gone.

Still I think this mode became a lot better.

Skirmishes:

Tier 8:

It was the easy credits grind for most high skilled clans. Even the less powerfull premiums were used to make some easy credits. However the mode got entirely ruined for skilled clans

1. SBMM - Suddenly only meeting other skilled opponents meant that tryharding was not the standard, and let me tell you.... tryhard gameplay is shitty on tier 8.

2. The wave of OP premium tanks. Before they tryhard setup was IS3s/T54l/+ one other odd tank. Suddenly Defenders, Patriots, 90mm GFs, Lorrains ... took over. Especially the Defender had a super negative impact on the tier 8 skirmishes. Combine that with skill based mm and you got yourself a gold spam premium food party. Less credits to be earnt.

3. Airstrikes in tier 8 skirmishes. Airstrikes are super random. They can 1shot one or even two tanks, or they might as well dont deal any damage at all. Yet there is ABSOLUTLY no fun to just get 1shot by an airstrike. What a stupid idea.

Tier 10:

Well nothing really changed for the longest of times. Ofc the SBMM forced you to play meta tanks and comps only but in a way that was still manageable. However over time they somehow lost their appeal for the fact that especially FAME had to wait longer in the q then to actually play.

Recently they changed skirmishes to 10vs10. I tried it the other day.... Oh boy this is stupid. Its META tanks only. 8 out of 10 tanks are Russian broken OP sheit tanks. I decided to call it the "Russian tank mode". 5 games were enough to never touch this no more.

Well I dont think that 10vs10 tier 10 is a good idea. The rest is down to pisspoor balancing.

Conclusions:

Some became better, much became worse. The injustice was not removed but just transfered from bad clans to good clans (and by the way... the better the clan the more likey they are also interested in the stronghold modes).

Bad balancing makes the gameplay much worse.

There is no real reason any more to actually become better. THere is absolutly no advantage being better.

SH was a relaxed and fun way to farm some credits and now its just mostly tryhard ... i wont even mind that too much if you would get more stuff ( crates, credits etc ) for meeting better opponents

get better --> get stronger opponents --> earn more credits  ... but WG says no

A few thoughts:

  • Defender is dis-balanced and the fact that they don't even sell it means that some people are permanently at a disadvantage, even if they would be OK to spend money on this game.
  • "Less credits to be earned" is exactly what WG wants. They want you to struggle for credits so that you are required to buy a premium account or the newest most OP premium tank. That is how they earn the money to support & develop the game. That is their business model. And they are a business.
  • WG like the randomness in this game as it adds a "casino" atmosphere which is addictive. That is why we have +-25% RNG. That is why we have airstrikes in SH. This is standard game design cookbook these days for games you want to be addictive (and WoT certainly is).
