Cookies not fitting in the glass is a serious problem though.

I think I know what happened. Someone at WG watched Ghost IN THE Shell and there was a misunderstanding due to the translation.

There are various reasons this can happen and none of them is possible to fix. In your case you actually missed the tank and probably hit the hill on the right side.

My technical speculation is as follows. When a player shoots client must get direction for a tracer first. But it is rendered by RNG on a server. Client can wait only limited amount of time for a server response. When client doesn't receive direction he must start to render tracer so that a player gets a fluid response, client can get response from a server meanwhile. Client chooses the most probable direction which is close to a center of aiming circle and starts to render. Meanwhile server rolls for a miss and in such a case it doesn't inform client at all to save communication (notice you get no response on client for misses). Client finishes tracer rendering which possibly goes through middle of a tank.

The same explains shots for which tracer misses a tank but makes a damage. Player has aimed wrong outside of a tank but his aiming circle partially covers a tank. Client doesn't get response from a server about direction and starts to render a tracer close to aiming circle center which doesn't look like hitting a tank. But server luckily rolls for a direction which hits a tank. Client finishes tracer render in its original direction without hitting a tank (to avoid look of a heat-seeking missile) but makes a damage to a tank.

There are many reasons why response from a server can be delayed or lost and not only because of a lag on a link, you could actually have a low ping.
