Laying in bed at the in-laws, watching looking at some WOT related stuff while I wait for the wife to wake up. Anyway, I came across the news about the changes to the aforementioned map...

these are not little changes, they’re just turning it into a worse version of Ruinberg.

Surely it’s time for father to take the map outside with his 12-bore and put it out of its misery? The map has clearly failed if they want to change it that much. Just remove it and walk away.

Kharkov is one of those maps that turned up just as I went on a break I think, so I'm not a big fan of it in its current iteration tbh

Is this a discussion tread or a notice of disapproval?

You do not mention any of the changes, do not put up an argument why these are bad, give us a link or anything else. Just: 'bad map / kill it',  which you could have done in the appropriate section.http://forum.worldoftanks.eu/index.php?/topic/649724-lets-say-no-to-kharkov-map/

1/10 for effort.

Maybe deserved, but not sure I am too bothered. I set the context from the beginning, and 1 out of 10 is probably the limit of my ability to create threads on the iPad while sitting in bed trying not to wake the missus. But thanks for the link, but that thread doesn’t really address the changes being proposed....

Here is a link to what I read this morning that prompted this thread....

If those changes are the only ones that will get implemented, you should be happy, but all maps have been flattened out and a lot of vegetation is gone .... seems to improve the game a lot for ..... say.... tanks with good frontal (especially turret) armor and little gun depression.

Kharkov is being removed in 1.0 and will be completely reworked because they didn't like the changes they had made in the end.

So no Ruinkharkov after all? Had a look at the changes, didn't like any of them either.

The first set of changes more or less removed half the town, maps was also 200m wider and longer. Tho the new changes leaves most of town back again. It's not easy to say how bad it will be by just the top down map. But can't be worse then the current version.

Off the top of my head, I can't remember a single map that would have been improved by later changes.

As the OP said, it pretty much looks like another Ruinedberg.  Too many city/pacman maps as it is without making them the same like Ensk, Pilsen and Minsk which is still to come.

That is not good news, i like my vegetation, and a few more rocks would be good, bad news indeed if these are to be removed.

They were actually trying to rework the map by removing most of the flanking lanes? To make it more predictable, they said? OMFG, are these guys retarded?

Uhm.. the answer is rather predictable, too, I think.

If they remove Stallingrad AND Kharkov in 1.0 it will be the best patch in a long while :)

It is weird though, those two and arguably Windstorm are all rather heavy driver friendly...

Is it possible WG would want to hurt Steve?! I feel a disturbance in the force ;)

I get the impression that Kharkov is rather prone to being unpredictable if one team deploys "wrong" in the center, or commits too heavily to the rather separated southeastern area.

To some degree it can be a good thing, at least if they don't overdo it. Aside from map features encouraging passive play (camping positions with hard/soft cover, including corridors), I've realized that a major feature of map design is how "important" a flank is. Pilsen is notoriously reliant on the 'heavy flank'. The rest of the map matters relatively little unless the team can either win or win hold (for long enough to either cap or encircle) the 'heavy flank'.

Compare that to Himmelsdorf. Pushing on any flank (rails, 'banana road', hill) can work, yet it's generally hard to win by taking one flank alone. It also feels much more 'friendly' to different types of tanks. Despite being a more 'closed' map than Paris or Pilsen, it is still a map I really don't mind playing in a medium or light tank.

Alas, there are few maps I actually like. Most are infected with the Paris/Pilsen-syndrome or is in some way or form possible to win by camping in some form. Wargaming anno 2014 had some ideas regarding adding corridors and flanking routes to everything. Sort of weird, but made for rather enjoyable maps. A heavy tank was still the best for those, but since fighting wasn't entirely linear you could usually contribute in a medium or TD.
