Is it me or the "remastered" maps are smaller?  They feel smaller, which if true, and I do believe it is true, is kinda funny.  For me the size of the maps were always an issue (THE issue) and now make them even smaller?  We will all end up fighting in even more corridor narrow maps with more armor and just have to eventually start relying even more on premium ammo.  You know, more than 5% that is currently the norm...

Or maybe they just made all the tanks bigger.

It's your eyes fooling your brain. Because you can now see well beyond the edge of the map it makes the map area seem smaller even though it's the same size as before.

Makes them feel bigger to me because it doesn't look like you're contained in a small box any more (even though you are)

What gets me is they spend all this time making everything outside the ‘map’ look good, why couldn’t they just open all that up to drive on if it’s all there already?????

The server side of the game is still running on the BigWorld engine so the limits of the game engine and mechanics remain the same. It's only the client that is new and can render stuff outside of the playable area.

The area outside the map is also just made to look good. It is not balanced out at all. It would take even more time to make the playable area bigger. For example make sure there aren't any OP defending locations and such.

Also: if this would be opened, what would you expect to be at the border of that new, bigger map? Right, nothing, you would once again feel like being trapped in a box.

Just because you see it, it doesn't means it exists .. in other words, the graphics could be implemented without collision models, and they probably are. Try to shoot at a distant mountain and see if the shell passes trough or hits it.

By increasing the size of the map, not only would the game make more sense, but it would also balance the vehicles out.  Accuracy and armor would play role, etc.  Anyway.

I have to say, the updated graphics make the game look very nice.

You think they eye candy outside the map use as much resources as the playable area?

Not true - there is hardly anything left from BigWorld, even server-side stuff. They got rid of those limitations too since we already have 1.5 km x 1.5 km maps in Grand Battles. Also, Frontline mode had 3 km x 3 km map. AFAIK other BigWorld limitations where number of players in one battle (removed, we can have 30 vs 30), maximum speed limit of 72 km/h (removed a while ago), maximum number of shells (objects) flying (removed long time ago) and limitations of tank physics (removed in 0.8 patch).

so let me get this straight: "big world" engine is the cause why maps are small...

This.

Besides, wargaming mentioned that bigworld maps are incompatible with encore maps, thus the entire reason for the maps having to be remade. And at the same time implementing various changes to a number of them. Implementing those changes on two different engine versions of maps is just too ineffective for even WG to consider.

Stuff outside of the map bounds are pretty low resolution. So that should hardly make a big impact.
