Hello,

I currently have the IS fully researched, but I'm hesitating between going for IS-3 or IS-M?
Can you please help me with this choice?
Thank you

No choice. IS-3 is much much better. It is mobile while IS-M turns like a stubborn donkey that wants to go the other way.

Question is what's your goal - is it just about a good tier 8 tank, or shall the tier 9s and 10s that follow be taken into the consideration? IS-M is fixed to Obj. 705 => 705A, IS-3 leads to Obj. 257 => IS-7, as well as T-10 and a maybe/hopefully yet to be announced/released tier 10.

I only played IS-3 => T-10 => IS-7 before the tech tree adjustments, which was a line of solid comfortably playable tanks.

You appear to be new to the game and not terribly good at it, so stick to the easy tanks for now. The IS-3 will be your new best friend.

Why compromise when you can get the best of both worlds? The new premium tier 8 Soviet heavy tank, the IS-3M ... coming soon to a server near you!

(But yeah, in reality it's just a screenshot of an IS-3 on tank.gg with the turret pointing backwards. But hey.)

Enough shenanigans. I would choose the IS-3 over the IS-M. The latter might have a bit more hard armour, but it's mostly effective against lower tiers and you will not get to see them that often. I haven't heard much enthusiasm from people playing the IS-M.

On the other hand, the IS-3 has been the staple tier 8 heavy for a long, long time. It's got a nice gun that packs a punch and remains pretty accurate when you just rotate the turret (but fall back after you shoot). The pike nose can be pretty effective, but only when pointing directly towards the enemy. The side armour on the IS-3 is fabulous. First it has 30mm of spaced armour. Behind that there's 90mm on a reverse sixty degree slope. That combination can withstand hits from any gun in the game. The side armour between the tracks is 90mm flat, so it's still pretty vulnerable. And there's that weak spot on the turret just above the gun. The trick is to not sit still when people are aiming at you.

And of course, the IS-3's more mobile. So when you notice the enemy's breaking through on the other flank, you can actually do something about it and help win games.

IS-M is the worst stock tank I can recall playing.

SirFoch says IS-M is better than IS-3, and he must be right :)

I have both in my garage at the moment.

I much prefer playing the IS-3 over the IS-M.

Mainly because the IS-3 has speed, turning, and a btter top gun.

my IS3 tends to get dusty in the garage, but when I take it for a spin I am reminded how ridiculously good it is.

Don't yet have the IS-M ready to play, but I certainly don't fear it on the enemy team list.

You can drive the IS-3 backwards to get the same experience as driving the IS-M

I had the same dilemma, I decided to research both even tho I have no plans to buy the IS3 ATM, I only researched it just because I might want the new Tier X coming after the T10, I'm not interested in the IS7  mainly because of the premium ammo, which is crap.... with such things as the 268 4 and Type 5 (which you can't reliably pen with the 303 pen APCR) it's no fun. On the other hand, the IS-M has crap premium pen also, so in Tier X battles it can be hugely frustrating (while the IS3 is workable), but the IS-M is pretty good for Detachments. Also the stock grind for the IS-M is horrid (I'm hoarding Free XP for the turret ATM, I'll buy the tank after I research the top turret), but I want the 705A for the next Ranked season so.. yeah.

The IS-M has a rear mounted turret which makes it super awkward in ridgeline situations but easier for side scraping. IS-3 is just a regular all-rounder and is decent.
