Hello everyone

As we know the IS-3 never saw service against the germans in WW2. My question is who do you think would win if a Tiger II and  a IS-3 would engage eachother in the plains of europe at a distance of 700 meters.

Thanks

The versions of the game? or the actual versions of the real tanks?

In WoT most probably the IS-3 will win, unless the Tiger II can engage on long range with a spotter.

In real life - if those two tanks had ever met on a battlefield - most probably the IS-3 would have won, as well. Ofc, there are all those myths about German tanks being unpenetrable by their opponents, but have a look what kind of tanks all those Tiger Is and Tiger IIs fought in WWII. Usually Shermans or British tanks (ingame this would be Tier VI or VII vs. Tier VIII). The armor of German tanks was not as unpenetrable as the myths said, as Nazi Gerrmany suffered a sefere lack of rare elements, especially tungsten. Thus, there was not only a severe lack of tungsten based ammunition but also of high class alloys. Therefore, the IS-3 would have most probably had the better armor and therefore the superior fitness to fight.

The Tiger II will probably win because the real IS-3 has the same 122mm D-25T as the IS-2 which simply isn't powerful enough to contest the frontal armor of a Tiger II.

Meanwhile the Tiger II with it's 88mm L/71 can reliably punch through the IS-3's hull, so there's your winner.

The D-25T is not at all accurately represented in WoT by the way, both it and the 88mm L/71 had more pen than ingame and the D-25T was noted for accuracy. On the other hand the D-25T had a 40 second reload when it appeared on the IS-2, and even after substantial modifications the reload was never better than 25 seconds, meanwhile the Tiger II had a 10 second reload

Of course there are some circumstances where the IS-3 can win such as ambush from the side or a lucky shot disabling gun etc, but if you just plonk these 2 tanks down 700m away in the open then the Tiger II is going to win 9/10 times because it has a much better gun for killing tanks.
