I bought the Witcher 3 many sales ago for cheap, and I've only just gotten around to playing it.  It is pretty to look at.  The combat is complete garbage though.  The loot system is incredibly disappointing also.  I liked the combat in Shadow of Mordor, but this game's combat boils down to attacks and dodges alternating.  Is it me, or is this game overrated?

I really loved the combat system. Using signs and potions can at first seem complicated and cumbersome, but they will give you so much diversity and different paths you can go about building the fighting style you want to use. You can check out some online guides for some well tested and proven setups, or just go by trial and error and see what comes up. At the end of my first playthrough of the vanilla game my character was so strong I was so powerful I only needed a couple swings at even the strongest level 30-40 opponents on the hardest difficulty setting because I boosted my damage and toxicity to max and took the relevant perks.

enable "enemy level scaling" so mobs level with you.

that way even a pack of wolves can be dangerous.

the combat system is simpler than shadow of mordor, as you don't have many combos.

the different attacks are gained by selecting appropriate skills.

I personally took a mixed approach 2/4 combat, 1/4 signs and 1/4 alchemy

so now - I think about 1/3 of second expansion finished - I can run two decoctions at once and still have tox

left for potions.

Just max that toxicity so u can run 4 decoctions, then get the damage % boost from toxicity and you'll have not only 4 decoctions at once but also gain like 200%+ raw damage on top of it

I will look online for some guides.  I have no idea how to do what you describe K_A.  I don't even fully understand toxicity.  I thought that was a limiting factor for using potions.  Now I need to find out what toxicity and decoctions are, and which skills to choose when leveling.  I have only chosen the skill that allows you to heal for 20 minutes after eating, and haven't spent any other points because the skills seem weak or I don't really understand how they will help me.

From what I have seen, the pure combat is indeed pretty lame, but the signs and stuff make it complex enough to provide fun.

It's definitely one of the games I'll play when I get my new computer...

don't let yourself spoil too much,

but the witcher 3 interactive map (website) helped me a lot in finding directions and "planning" trips.

nowadays I use the fast-travel option a lot.

just one more advice: save early and often.

I might be able to post a picture of my skill selection tomorrow or so,

when I have the game working again. I moved the install folder from my SSD some months ago,

but it looks like I just have to change some path variables in registry.
