Is there any, or are they just populated according to number of players?

Only difference for me is about 5ms ping difference in favour of EU2.

I gather that more people play on EU1, not sure if anyone can dig out any reliable data on the playing habits/styles of those on either server.

Inherently there should be no difference, so if you let yourself get assigned randomly I guess the login server distributes players mostly evenly. You can select a preferred server to log in to if you want.

Usually have 10 ms better ping on EU1 and it's more populated leading to faster queues and balanced MM (said no one ever). I think EU2 is used mainly for skirmishes, CW and other events like that, even though you can play randoms as well.

In my case EU2 has a slightly lower ping.  A typical difference would be 3ms, say 31 on EU1 and 29 on EU 2.  So unless there's a reason I have to be on EU1 (eg ranked battles) I use EU2.

It's totally anecdotal but I know players to the western side of Europe seem to gravitate to EU2 more than EU1. No idea if players to the east play on EU1 more than EU2?

Yep, location. EU1 is near Frankfurt, while EU2 is somewhere in Benelux. And CW is usually played on EU2, so I do recall getting some serious lag long time ago, no idea how it is now.

For me EU1 is slightly more stable and slightly more less inclined to lag.

There are different simpletons playing in the EU1 than those on EU2.

:harp:

I have slightly better ping on EU1 so it is my prefered one.

Back in the day I played on both, I think the EU2 server had more people playing from Eastern Europe and EU1 had more West Europeans.

But maybe I was wrong.

For me I get a lot of strange lag on EU1 so I play mostly on EU2.

I am somewhat surprised that people even pay attention to which server they are playing on. I, for one, just keep that server selection box at "Auto" and hardly ever notice which one I get.

They are placed at different locations.

This means that you will go through different hubs when connection to them.

In theory this should cause a more stable connection as the 2 servers do not stain the same hubs.

Allowing for a better gaming experience.

But it may not always be the case as some the local hubs are old and not the best for gaming.

And some hubs will be overloaded when big event are steamed. Like the OL or the World Cup.

It only seems to make a difference in the middle of the night, when EU1 seems to always have more people playing than EU2, so match-making can go a little faster. I leave it on auto when I log in and only switch if I have a run of particularly potato teams or terrible results. It's probably a placebo effect but I enjoy the huffiness of saying, "to hell with you idiots, I'm switching to the good server!" regardless of which one I'm joining.

EU2 generally has less players so the automatic system tends to push people to EU2 so EU2 has a high proportion of people who can't remember to select a server when they log in (or don't know there is an option).  Make of that what you will.

I play on EU1, I don't play on EU2. From this it follows, that you have a much better chance of getting the pleasure of being either on the same team with me, or even a greater pleasure of being on the opposite team....

Not much, in truth... it's not very relevant.

A slightly malicious might might suggest that EU1 has more players because people make faulty assumptions about the consequences of being on a busier server so it has a high proportion of people who don't understand statistics :P
