And yet France with no royal family attracted over twice as many people than the UK, despite the draw of the royals.

And yet their tourism revenue is lower than Britains, despite the disparity in numbers.

Why the hell do people care about that stuff so much? Don't they have anything better to do?

I found it all a bit boring. No jousting, no drunken family members having a punch up and no weird uncle dancing.

You could not possibly be suggesting that the fragrant and surprisingly youthful in appearance Monsieur et Madame le President Macron might be less of a tourist Head of State attraction than our own clapped out Royal Family?

Interesting 13 minute speech by the American chap, I don't feel it over ran by more than oooooh 12 minutes.....

Lost interest and rejoined to find it had become a food safety lecture, then a little while later a car engine mechanics lecture....

Could have been worse, could have had powerpoint...

Could have been the Oscars, with everyone rabbiting on about #Metoo

I have my doubts about whether it will last, but for novelty value it's the first time in over 1,000 years that a member of the Royal Family has married a black person.

Having watched that I suddenly understand why in Europa Universalis 4 my country takes a stability hit whenever my monarch commits a diplomatic faux-pas.

Even THAT is the fault of the British royalty!

Does an ordinary wedding draw in hundreds of millions of tourist revenue?

commonwealth people have nothing else better to do than celebrate those who lord over them like celebs. It's sickening. People were camping out a week early to just to get a glimpse.

It is encouraging that people voluntarily like to see their betters for pure amusement

Compare and contrast to the oiling up to horrible bosses in the typical office job.

Or to the tech billionaires ripping them off and stealing their personal information

I couldn't care less, but i don't go picking on those interested either. I understand the weight of symbolism. We are heading towards troubled times, don't go pointing fingers at what makes people happy.

Well, at least the UK royals make themselves useful in the army and actually join the fighting. The Dutch ones are lazy bums with ceremonial titles.

In that respect I like the British royal family a *LOT* more.

(I will bite, but will discuss with a grown up rather than a professional troll.)

I agree with your point above, but I think the ONS maths is a bit short. As well as the wedding costs, you also need to include all of the investment and annual expenditure that is required to attract tourists and make the royals a thing in the first place. This includes direct civil list costs and indirect civil servant, and police costs. There's also the opportunity cost of the palaces, paintings, land etc that form the crown estate that could be much better deployed for the benefit of the general population.

Profit and Loss aside, there's also the social element to consider. If we want to become a modern egalitarian state where everyone has the same opportunities, then surely we want to dispense with nonsense and flim-flam like the royals and the aristocracy.

(a) I think I'd trust ONS methodology over your rough estimates.

(b) I do not wish to leave profit and loss aside. I tend to judge things on cold hard numbers. By that judgement the flim-flam business runs at a profit to the nation. If it didn't I'd be in favour of abolishing it. As to egalitarianism, well it now appears you can be either the daughter of a stewie, or an actor and still get to marry a Prince if you want to. So it would appear in that respect everyone has the oppurtunity. Personally given the chance to marry into the house of Saxe-Coburg Gotha I would say no thanks, but thats just me.

It's not as if either the Saxe-Coburg Gotha's or any members of the British aristocracy have been particularly sniffy about who they marry for quite some time now. The good looking lady in the picture below the in the middle with the tiara is Viscountess Weymouth (her dad's Nigerian)

One could even suggest that social mobility is actually promoted by the flim-flammers and aristo's in a way that the noveau riche don't yet manage.

In the picture below the goodlooking lady on the left is some septic who married Viscount Hinchingbrooke
