Great to have such a thing. Had an absolutely amazing place for whisky at my former town, where the owners combined a bar with a shop for whisky with almost 600 bottles on the menue.

Now I have also a really good expert shop for that (minus the bar) also about 10 minutes by bike from my new place.

What was it called?

This is the one near me:

It is one from an independent label. The German Islay Cask Company produced together with the Caol Ila Distillery the 'Calla'. That is a Caol Ila with a 4-month-finish in a Pinot Noir Barrique Red Wine cask.

They used this one: CAOL ILA. Cask No. 311072, distilled on 5. Juni 2008, so that is 9.5 years in the original cask and then 4 month finishing.

Sounds nice. I’ve still got a bottle of Caol Ila 32 year old which started life in 1974.

They have some rather good things there, although my knowledge of the German Language is limited, it is still nice looking at the pictures.:)

Still unopened as I’m keeping it for a special occasion. Once it’s gone trying to get another one is going to be hard.

I admire your discipline - not sure I would have that much self control:(

Depends on your own philosophy, I think. At my old place I got a dram of a rare Balblair from 1986 in my favorite bar and it was the last one. So, I relished it with pleasure, knowing that probably no one else will ever again be able to taste that particular whisky (except maybe someone, somewhere, far away on this planet, whom I will never know).

Absolutely, my bottle is number 65 of 261 so I doubt much of it is left now.

I can certainly understand the desire to keep something special for a special occasion - I have a 30yr bottle of fine Panamanian Rum set aside for my birthday this year - it has been REALLY difficult not opening it.

Some people even buy whiskey with the intention of selling it in a few years - can be quite lucrative if you know what you're doing.

Personally, I put it in the same category as fast cars - they are made to be driven, not hidden away in a dusty garage, but then I have always suffered from a lack of self-discipline:)

Have you checked to see what it is worth now?

Would still be no reason for me to sell my precious stock of Whisky... :teethhappy:

It’s one of those weird ones about possession increases the value to a person. I wouldn’t buy it that price but never would I sell it at that price.

I can see why some speculate on Whiskey, I mean can you imagine what that bottle will be worth in 10 years!

I can see why people do it but there’s still part of me that thinks they’re denying people who would have enjoyed it for what it is and it ends up in the hands of people who enjoy it because it’s expensive.

Couldn't agree more.

A retailer would call it 'Prestige Pricing' - I try my hardest not to play that game but, at the end of the day, something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I love my rum  and there is a very large amount of 'rare' rum that are just silly prices - they charge what they do because they can.

I spent the day with my dad at the local military shooting range shooting WW2 era weapons, he was in the army, I was in the air force, he claims that makes him better at hitting the target, so far we see no evidence of that, but we see a lot of evidence of someone excusing his lack of performance on age! I can highly recommend a day at the range with friends or family, then just start a "sniping" challenge and voila the day is made ;)
