I know it might sound odd, but i think the devs messed up a little bit with the Japanese national flag during WW2.

The rising sun war flag version used by the IJA from 1870 to 1945 and since tanks used mainly by this branch, more likely we should get THAT one.

If you look at the newly added Italian tech tree, they use the royal Italian army flag as it used until 1946, and yet, the Japanese using the post WW2 version.

Correct me if i am wrong, and express your opinion if you want :)

Afaik, the discussion ran quite hot in WoWS, however, WG does not want to clash with almost all Asian countries which were occupied by Imperial Japan, and these countries really have some massive issues with that flag.

So, overall, this flag has the same issues in lots of Asian countries, as the swastika Third Reich flag has in Germany (or maybe even a bit more).

I agree with OP, that flag would fit better on ww2 tanks than the modern Japan flag.

I suspect it's because the flag is controversial in any shape or form in some nations that had dealings with it during the late 30's and up to the mid 40's. China & Korea to name a few. Tho it's not banned by law anywhere. It's still causing issues when shown. Tho the Korean navy has stated several times that it would be "rude" to ask the Japanese Navy not to use it anymore.

Japan on the other hand still uses it... everywhere. Even on food.

I wouldnt mind it, but no. There are some complitations with IJA flag.

Besides, basic Japanese flag is fine. We do have post-war Japanese vehicles as well, not just IJA-era ones.

Exactly.

So it is pretty much due to political reasons why we got the modern Hinomaru flag in the games.

Same as why we don't have the actual flag of Nazi Germany in almost any game, and instead have some censored look-alike.

One reason why Wargaming could excuse themselves with is the fact we got post-war JGSDF tanks as well.

True, but there is a soviet flag in game which is most likely causing issues in post USSR countries like Ukraine and the Baltic states.

People getting arrested in Ukraine for weaving the red flag. So goes for the Italian's and their conquest in Africa, you just cant make everyone happy i guess :(

Many flags annoy someone but there are a couple that just do not get used in the game for fairly obvious reasons.

Bound to be a mod so you see what you want so problem solved

If you're Chinese, this is a big NO-NO. One CN model wore a dress with the Rising Sun and was labelled as a traitor.

The difference is, AFAIK, the Rising Sun flag was never banned, anywhere, and is still being used today in different variations by the Japanese self defence forces. The Rising Sun flag would be more correct also in WoT, at least for older tanks.. for the more modern ones, maybe not. But I'm not sure the national flag's ever been used on tank turrets.

I prefer the one we have.

Classic simplicity of the red sun, without over doing it with rays that don't bring anything to it.

Plus the white won't do well with my red chrismas camo !

They should grow up. Almost the entire generation that was involved in that conflict are dead. Hellooooooooooooooooo............we are in 2018. It's been almost 3 generations. That's why we can never have peace when there is always one country with a feud running against another.

Well, correct me if I am wrong, but I cannot name any country, that is equally triggered by the Soviet Flag as e.g. the Chinese or the Koreans because of the Rising Sun.

Well Ukrainians for first place, they suffered heavily under soviet control. Then you have the poles, Romanians, Baltic states, Georgia, Armenia and all the "stans".

Sorry, half my family is Polish and not one of them, nor any of my Polish friends is offended in any way by the Sovjet Flag. They all do not like Russia or the history with Russia that much, but they have no issues with the flag at all.

Most people probably don't have any issues with the Third Reich flags either. I think the real reason might be that in Post WW2 Germany/Austria everyone was looking for the best ways how to distance themselves as much as possible from the politics of that era... :B

At least in Germany, it is prohibited by law to display the swastika, except for art or educational/scientific reasons. And that is also why there are no video games sold in Germany with the swastika. This goes so far, that there are game versions only for Germany, where the swastika was edited out (Wolfenstein The New Order for example). So, for gaming companies it is just a question of money and effort if they want to play safe on the international market or no.
