I got myself hyped about about the Japanese heavies, but then I heard they got nerfed to oblivion. Are they still worth going for? Or should I use a KV-1 for my frontline tank needs?

They haven't been nerfed; type 4 and type 5 are still so much armored that it is pretty much AP proof. Low tier heavies are very good too but easily penned when bot tier, but very competitive with their HE guns. However you should expect being fired at by a lot of "gold" rounds.

So I would say that it is worth it if you're ready to be slow, spammed by gold and spam gold too (gold rounds on type 4 and type 5 having more alpha for the same pen as the basic HE ones)

The line is definitely easy and fun to play but don't get the same expression for tier 9 and 10. There will be angry players waiting to shoot heat at you. and when that happens, you are most likely 2 or 3 shots away from garage.

They are fine and as you would expect for such huge tanks they have advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantages first they are huge so difficult to hide obvious arty targets they mostly have good gun depression but because they are so tall some tanks can get close in and you cannot shoot them.

You can run the tank up a slope or obsticle to get more gun depression so its situational.

Side armour is a big flat weaker target.

Advantages extremely good frontal armour and often rear armour. Very good turret armour.

Derp specialists while they do play pretty well with the AP guns they get many just play them as giant heavily armoured KV2s.

01E was the one that got nerfed and rightly it had too good a gun and was way too fast, its still a decent tank.

01 plays equally well with the 14 cm gun firing AP or the 150mm with HE for many its the the strongest tier for tier.

As you progress to the O NI and O HO the armour gets better still but you are also facing much more dangerous tanks and better players.

They are still good solid heavy tanks there are gun depression limitations due to the position of mini turrets on the front hull but you can manage.

Type 4 and Type 5 heavy are many feel unbalanced because the premium rounds do extra damage.

There is some truth in that though its not as bad as is made out, the standard HE costs 1320cr has 75 pen and average 1100 damage. the premium round costs 6400cr still has 75 pen and does 1400 average damage.

So you are paying 5 times the price for maybe 300 more damage.

Since you will often not penetrate you will not do that consistently  so yes its good but not that amazing imo.

They should make the Smaller 14cm gun better so you can play the tank 2 ways as a derp monster or with a lower damage high pen AP gun.

One final advantage of the Japanese heavies is the top armour the roof of the hull and turret is much stronger than other nations tanks.

Not at the lower tiers O1E its 30mm O1 50mm thats pretty average,

ONI and OHO its 60mm and Type 4 and 5 heavy its 76mm

This means that a spall liner can be useful I have found that certainly the Type 4 and 5 can be almost immune to many SPGs, since they nerfed the pen not many can pen 76mm consistently.

Something to consider if you ever find arty a problem.

He mechancis:

if the shell doesn't penetrate ( no overmatch allowed)

1: the overall damage is halved.

so the 1400 premium one makes on avarage 150 more damage than the standard shell.

2: the thickness of what ever armor you hit is substracted from the halved damage.

So against 200 mm of armor the standard shell would do 350 damage on avarage

and the premium 500.

given the long reload, bad aimtime and unprecise gun it's not exactly a stellar performer.

Well, there's already been a lot of stuff about:

1) you'll hate arty

2) you'll get used to get spammed by premium ammo.

3) you'll get used to being rushed while on reload if you're without support.

4) you'll get used to having low profile tanks hugging your side and there's not much you can do about that.

My own experience goes as far as tier7. It's the first line I picked because my friend recommended it, being strong armoured and easy to play. Fact is it almost made me quit this game. Derping is - while effective - (IMHO) very boring way to play this game. So later on while grinding O-Ni, I just decided I won't do this to myself and just sold it, moved the crew back to O-I and have been occasionally derping around in it when I feel like it and used the tank for occasional skirmish or whatnot.

So, sure it's effective and some people certainly enjoy those tanks and derping in general. So I guess go for it and try it out yourself.

If you don't mind slow tanks, go for it.

The Japanese heavies are certainly worth "going for"...... when I'm in my Bishop. They are so big and slow I just peck them to death.

I got to the OI and hated it, but the experience was worthwhile, only you can decide if the tank is good for you or not, I hated them, some love them, we are all different.

Oh and arty love them, to bits!

I'm on the tier 6 just so I can do the Campaign missions for blocked armour etc (Ironically I done HT-15 for my T28HTC in the Black Prince with honours but sold that pos)

As in 'the OI-exp is not a gamebreakingly OP as it used to be.' Yes.

Are they worth going for? They can be fun at Tier 5-7, but after a while it gets really boring when you slowly drag a giant bunker around the battlefield. Expect anyone who sees you to just load the gold ammo and start blasting, because in most cases it's the only thin they can do.
