As per request.

There is indeed a topic on this, and I've researched it intensely for your enlightenment.

Here I will be ranking my favourite four way interchanges, by efficiency, size, and just looking cool.

5) Cloverleaf interchange.

The first cloverleaf interchange was patented by Arthur Hale, February 29, 1916. The very first one built was built in 1929 at the Lincoln highway, called the Woodbridge interchange.

The cloverleaf interchange is a nice interchange, not only because of its resemblance to a cloverleaf, but also because it allows two motorways to merge without the need of traffic slowing or stopping.

Its main disadvantage is the tendency of speeding lorries to overturn if they go to fast around the bends, but in my opinion this just adds to the excitement.

4) Roundabout.

Good old fashioned, reliable, efficient. We all know and love. Extremely common in the U.K., with increasingly popular status in the US.

3) Single point Urban Interchange

Not only does it have a nice name, this interchange allows efficient traffic flow, while reducing the need for right hand turns. The name singl point comes from the fact that all traffic can be controlled by only one set of traffic lights. However, the fact it uses a bridge means increased construction costs, it takes up a fair bit of room, however still far less than a clover or stack interchange.

2) Stack Interchange

Wow. This monstrosity can shift 1099 vehicles per minute, just for this reason it deserves a high spot. It is usually seen as a four level stack, and the UK has the privilege of hosting three of these, at the junction of the M4 and M25 near Heathrow Airport  in London, at the junction of the M23 and M25 to the south of London, and at the junction of the M4 and M5 near Bristol (the Almondsburry interchange).

These are great, as they eliminate the need for weaving, vehicles follow a single path. There does exist one six level interchange, on the Yan'an East Road, China. It combines two elevated motorways, the Nanbei Elevated road and the Yan'an Elevated Road. A central pillar supporting the roads is called the Nine Dragon Pillar.

1) Diverging diamond Interchange

My favourite. Cool name, serves a purpose. One of the best. Far smaller than Stack or Clover interchanges, useful for busy out of town roads. It unusualy occasionaly requires traffic to drive in the other side of the road, at a crossover X. They are very safe, as no long turns are required to clear opposing traffic. Diving in diamonds have been used in France since the 70s, in 2009 they were listed one of the best engineering innovations of the year.

A cool video that ranks almost every interchange on traffic flow per minute. An education.

Ok. So, this is about standard interchanges... but what about the 'Efficient 4 war interchange'?

Ah, maybe I put that there to get you to open the topic to comment this, pointing it out, yet to make sure I didn’t actually slip anything in about war way interchanges you read the topic, and so my goal is fulfilled...
