Do people actually use this? Considering the amount of HE spam these days?

Well, to be honest, the effect of a spall liner can be rather questionable at times.

For one, it only helps against non-penetrating HE hits.

For another, the actual benefit might seem rather smallish.

Granted, the one being tested in the video is, iirc, only a heavy one.

As it's a super-heavy spalliner, in my opinion yes. Taking 0 dmg from arty and other jap heavies never gets old.

If I'm getting this right,It halves HE dmg by ~50%,i.e. you take 50% dmg of the actual damage that RNG intended?

No. It don't half the damage, it add 50% more effective armour against non penetrated HE. So a 200mm armour hit by a 1000 alpha non penetraded HE will gives you 200 damage instead of 300.

Works well if the shell blast radious can't splash on soft roofs.

In example, my hulldown ST-I with heavy spall liner (30% bonus), can basically ignore any 155mm non derp in game if it hit the upper part of the turret (trolled several O-Oh in this way) and strongly reduce Type5 shell effect. But that's because it has a 250mm mantlet above a 250-300mm plate. Spall liner gives the bonus to compensate for high roll on damage for the avarage 910-950 alpha HE.

Type4-5 don't have the double layer of armour, but the thick plates still grant around 450 HP reduction against non penetrated HE (in the 280mm zone with spall liner). That is quite good.

Nope. I had it wrong for a long time as well but it is described in the WoT-Wiki.

In case you want to read the related Wiki-articles:

The formula for damage-calculation of non-penetrating HE hits and near misses:

So pretty much as Dava_117 wrote just now.

The rule of thumb is half the damage and subtract the armour thickness (multiplied by spall liner bonus). It's quite usefull to know when an HE can damage a tank or not. :)

I've seen 155mm-armed artillery hit a Maus or Type 5 or T95 ...(basically any super-thick armor) and do 0 damage. It does help a lot.

I have one on both Maus and Type 5. I have tested both with and without it. About 100-150 dmg less by arty with the Spall Liner. Also it reduces the stun time with few seconds and I get less damage by other Type 5's. So yes, it does work. It's not huge improvement, but it helps.

I don't think it's worth it. Arty has been nerfed so much that the Japanese Heavies pretty much shrug it off anyway.

I have one on my Type 5.

It's funny when the Batchat arty hits you with all 3 rounds in his clip for maybe 50dmg per hit

On my type 5, I barely notice if I get hit by arty, only time I realise is when the crew get stunned, and yes it does have the spall liner.

It's fun on my hype 5, maus and the T95.

Tanks you know will be pummeled by arty and then see them bounce off or do next to no damage.
