After doing a string of marathons that resulted in acquiring tanks I never play, I mistakenly chose not to do the Progetto marathon. Turns out it's pretty good and worth having.

So in an attempt to avoid making the same mistake over the Caernarvon AX, is it any good?

This is how I see it.

Pros:

Fast firing, accurate gun with decent pen and gun depression.

Maneuverable

Decent turret

Could be a good FL tank if that becomes a permanent tier 8 game mode.

Premium

Cons:

Annoyingly crappy alpha for a heavy.

Mediocre to poor Hull

Poor gun handling when traversing turret.

Tier 8 sucks atm.

My concern would be that 230 Alpha will make this tank annoying to play, who wants that on a heavy? Is it going to be one of those heavies you basically can't play as a heavy but have to play as a support/med, standing off the enemy and finding slopes and ridges to use? because that was the sort of stuff that made me hate the FCM. With the 3/5/7 template on top I can't see myself using this tank in randoms.

The main pull would be use in FL where it could be pretty good on those bigger maps against same tier opposition.

If they do one of those marathons where you pretty much have to pay something through the use of tokens, I can't see it being worth it.

What do you think?

Edit: Okay, now I see the other AX marathon thread.

Looks like it's slightly nerfed Caernarvon. Which means it would not be ridiculously OP, just OP.

It's basically a pre-buff Caernarvon with spaced armor on the turret. So...I suspect not really no tbh.

Might be worth it as a crew trainer, seeing as the only other readily available British Heavy Premium is the Excelsior.

I read somewhere it was going to be stupid hard / time consuming so they could sell as many credits as possible.

Your first two games in it will be amazing. Hordes of tier 6s will die to your gun... Then you will spend the next 50 battles getting smashed in the face by tier 10s, at which point you will wonder why you ever cared

Not exactly. It has like ~300-400 more DPM than pre-buff Caernarvon (it had similar DPM to tier 8 meds which sucked), it's faster and has more engine power but worse gun handling on turret traverse and view range.

You can buy it in the tech tree with gold... I think.

It's also relatively often in the shop, as opposed to the TOG which was removed from sale, except that one time.

Not even going to try it, the 260 missions are already frustrating enough.

You mean viable in terms of how long WoT is going to be around?

It's available in the tech tree for gold or at least it has been for as long as I remember. I haven't checked recently but I can't see that changing. Preferential match-making, reasonable mobility for a tier 5 heavy, low alpha with pew-pew reload and comedy rear armour that fools people quite often (it's 100mm at the back, 30mm on the sides and the wide tracks eat a lot of shells). Worth picking up if you have gold and don't know what to spend it on but wait until there's a promo. because it's usually 50% off.

As for the marathon, I won't be taking part. I've done a few over the years - the T-44-100, T25 Pilot and Progetto - but there's nothing about this one that makes me think it'll be a particularly interesting tank to play.

Well, they did say it would not be as easy as the Progetto one. Tho they did not go into details about what they meant. But they did say more on the time-consuming end of things. Missions are in stages like the Progetto was tho. But if they mean more or just harder missions. I guess we will find out.

But what they basically say about the event in the end. "not many will get it".  But like every marathon in the past, I suspect they will sell it in a bundle etc ready to go regardless for the rest.
