I find arty to be very weak. And although you can pile up some damage i'm not sure that it's still worth the trade for the loss of HP and firepower you get from another tank.

So does anyone still uses it in clan wars? Does it have its place on the battlefield or is just something that was important for different strategies long ago but not anymore?

Depends a lot if you're talking T8 or T10. For T8 it's only useful in very specific situations (e.g. digging out hardcore camps on mountain pass).

At T10 however arty is often a critical element, both for attacking and defending. Of course it still depends a lot on map and tactic, if you play on Himmelsdorf or plan to zerg-rush the enemy of course you'll pick a regular tank instead. But if you expect the battle to last for 10 minutes or more on an open map arty is often the deciding factor, as you can deal damage without risking the HP of your main force, so you build up an HP advantage for the final shootout.
