what do you want it for? Training british crews? Then it is a pretty good tank (even though imhop the Centurion 5/1 RAAC is better). Credit making? Not so good. Alpha vs shell cost means its an ok credit earner but certainly not the best. Dont own the T54 proto, so cant really Judge on it, but same questions apply regarding crew training Soviet crews and / or credit making.

It is the poor man's Centurion 5/1. Not a bad tank, but worse than the Cents. The main problem with it that the ammo is way too overpriced.

Pass, the tank is a joke as a t8 premium!
RAAC or Primo if you want sniper mediums with "sturdy" turrets"
As for t 54 prot! Limited on top speed but can even face off t8's in dog fights! So yeah it's a decent tank!

It is not a bad premium, but it is not great either, the RAAC is the better option. If you have a lot of lootbox gold and want a brit med, it gets the job done. Has some funny angles on it that may result in unexpected bounces, the turret will hold up vs tier 8 and even 9 guns with proper positioning(it is angle dependent, so try not to hulldown below the enemy tanks) It is fast and accurate enough, but it has really poor DPM. Shell cost is also absurd at 680 creds per 230dmg, but that is a problem every 20pdr armed tank shares.

Overall, if you have some gold lying around it is a good enough tank, but if you want the best, wait for the RAAC.

Oh, and one more thing, it is British, therefore it is classy and has access to black paint:
Look at dat wolfy boi:

It is good but not great. Against Tier 10 is weak.

Almoust every game with it is against Tier 10.

It is good to have the matchmaking fixed

At least there's only ever going to be a maximum of 3 of the tier 10s ;) The view-range with optics is usually pretty good at farming spotted/assist damage on them too.

WG, is it that hard to balance similar tanks with at least minor differences between them ?  Like better mobility, better hull/turret armour, gun hard/soft stats, gun depression rate of fire and so on ?

Your balancing policy is very annoying and insulting for your customers. Right now, Centurion 5/1 is simply better (in the best case are equal in some specs) than FV4202. Using the current balancing policy tier 8 premiums will be like a tier 9. Please, milk us gently!

1. buy 5/1 rather than 4202.

2. T-44-100 > T-44 > T-54 Mod 1, IMO

For those that may be curious about its capability, just the first game this morning on a map that arguably doesn't suit the tank too well:

Apologies for screenshots and potential "bragging" but I want to highlight that it still performs in tier 10 and still makes a lot of credits and it can be a lot of fun!

Spoiler

Can you share your own games?

Every player can have a good game with any tank, that doesn't mean it is balanced nor op nor up, there are other conditions to make those assumptions...
There are so many players and community contributors who are blaming the 3-5-7 template for this state of the game and you are justifying it with one game? Are you serious?

Nice of you to look at the topic and look at the tank, if you want to give feedback on the MM you can go to the dedicated thread and you can look at the announcement. So yes, I'm serious.

The benefits -- DPM and improved armour -- of the premium Centurions don't make good of the difference in size. While on paper the Centurions are better tanks, the FV4202 performs better for no other reasons that it has a much smaller profile and better gun handling. Still, at the end of the day, is a tier VIII medium, which in the bigger scheme of things isn't all that of a good thing to be.
