really bad news for the web

https://blogs.window...-collaboration/

especially after reading

"For example, they may start integrating technologies for which they have exclusive, or at least ‘special’ access. Can you imagine if all of a sudden Google apps start performing better than anyone else’s?”

This is already happening. I very recently worked on the Edge team, and one of the reasons we decided to end EdgeHTML was because Google kept making changes to its sites that broke other browsers, and we couldn’t keep up. For example, they recently added a hidden empty div over YouTube videos that causes our hardware acceleration fast-path to bail (should now be fixed in Win10 Oct update). Prior to that, our fairly state-of-the-art video acceleration put us well ahead of Chrome on video playback time on battery, but almost the instant they broke things on YouTube, they started advertising Chrome’s dominance over Edge on video-watching battery life. What makes it so sad, is that their claimed dominance was not due to ingenious optimization work by Chrome, but due to a failure of YouTube. On the whole, they only made the web slower.

Now while I’m not sure I’m convinced that YouTube was changed intentionally to slow Edge, many of my co-workers are quite convinced – and they’re the ones who looked into it personally. To add to this all, when we asked, YouTube turned down our request to remove the hidden empty div and did not elaborate further.

And this is only one case."

What's Edge?

Edge is the Win10 name for Internet Explorer.

And Internet Explorer has pretty much always been a last resort browser for anyone computer savvy.

Not really. Internet Explorer and Edge are 2 different browsers.

I don't know who told you this but What has Edge to do with Explorer? Nophing.

I moved to Chrome just over a year ago and never looked back, both Edge and IE are slow clunky trash in comparison.

Chrome has the worst privacy and isn't the fastes.
Opera is faster and has better privacy, and has a inbuild VPN and addblocker
Firefox has even better privacy, the best privacy of all the webbrowsers.

Just don't use Chrome or IE or Edge.

And Mozilla is barely used.

The secondary browser I got, Pale Moon, is ranked directly beneath it, while Vivaldi ranks directly above.

In the end though, all that matters is if a browser supports adblockers or not.

To be fair. Edge is better, and less power hungry for laptops etc vs the outdated Internet Explorer. That and MS more or less said IE 10 is dead not 2 days ago. As those two are not one and the same thing even tho they both come with Win 10. Edge is their main one. Idk why they wanted to keep IE alive. Tho IE 10 is not near as bad as the Win 7 version was. That even had a hard time downloading your browser of choice. As that's what 90% used IE for once now and then. And in general, Edge not the worst you can use today if you got nothing else. IE def still is.

Well even edge does that. Same one used on Firefox or Chrome... or rather made by the same people.

Still the one I prefer. I can't stand Chrome's power hungry levels, or Operas UI. There are ofc many other options out there. But I can't be bothered to explore them all when the one I use does what I want it to. And works like I want it to.

phah Opera is looong dead -- no idea whats the status of the opera revival attempts/cant even remember the name/ but I guess they are also based off of Chromium= with Edge gone we are left wit two engine -- Gecko and KHTML forks ;(

as far as I know Edge is a fork of IE with significant chunks of code removed/rewritten/added=

anyway, lack of competition aint good ;( even he the bashed IE lead/closely followed by Firefox in stuff like hardware acceleration, leaving Chrome biting the dust at the time\ Edge added smth new/interesting/different to the UI scene -- look how old fashioned Chrome looks -- but they admittedly lost momentum the last year or so

It suits MS to move to that as why would they waste their own money in developing Edge when nobody uses it.

Good move.

Because we need only one web rendering engine.

I hope Mozilla does the same.

This is also false.

1. Google are writing closed source "standards"

2. Edge is faster on slow PC on let's say Youtube HD video (try some Celeron or AMD APU)

3. Chrome is bloated and slow because of "Chrome OS ideology"

In fact Chrome starts with the PC just to make the lunch a tad bit faster. Also runs in the background if you don't disable that. I'm only using Chrome because i'm lazy to transfer everything else to another browser (Mozilla is currently only major browser with different engine) and i don't have a Mac to completely sync my iPhone with PC in this case Mac.

But since i don't game too much on my Dell, i think next upgrade will be MacBook Pro.
