Ammorack damage can be game ending, even if the tank won't blow up from it, it makes reload time so slow, that you are practically defenseless (for 90 seconds, if you just used up your repair kit to flee after being hit with HE ammo, that caused both ammorack and track damage).

 

Only going on assumption, but shells are not stored only on one side of the turret and/or hull (in most tanks), but spread to both sides, and rear, so to make tanks burdened by frequent ammoracks more playable, maybe make ammorack damage have 2-3 parts (depending on tank type), ammo rack would only get damaged where you were hit (left side damage, right side damage, rear damage), and damage would only affect part of your ammo storage (your number of shells), so even if ammoracked, you could still access to a portion of your shells in the standard reload time (and of course unaffected shells would be used up first by default). I would not exclude the chance of having a HE shell cause more than one (or all) sides of your ammo rack to be broken, but it should be (way) less frequent.

 

*added with edit: Critical explosions could still happen, the suggestion only about times when/how ammo rack breaking effects reload time.

Nah, I enjoy watching turrets fly in the air. Although not very fun when it happens to me.

Critical explosions could still happen. My suggestion is only about times, when broken ammorack affect the tanks reload time.

my problem with ammorack damage is that when you know the loader has the shell in his hands already and is loading in the gun and if you get a hit to your ammorack the loader will be like: 

''nope! they hit our ammorack but even tho i could just shove this shell to the breach with normal speed, im not going to. i will move 50% slower now.''

Sure, but let's add even more realism: once the ready storage ammo is expended, you will get a permanent increase in reload times.

Ammunition is not stored in one little box in the corner so a crew is just going to grab the next shell from the ready racks!

 

But this is a game invented by utterly ignorant computer nerds, so that's it!
