Pros:

"I've been spotted at X!"

"The clicker X hit me and is now on reload!"

"Their tank X has Y HP left."

Cons:

Have a possible mental breakdown.

"[Bunch of insults]"

"[Crappy your mom jokes]"

"Look at your stats [insult]!"

"Foch,uselss xvm using NOOB"

"Redline camping [insults]"

"I think this game needs X for the liking of Y."

In other words,I turn on chat for useful information at the expense of weak mental and psychological attacks.

Not sure if those automated messages are a pro either. Really useful info from chat is rare.

You missed the spamming of the grid you are on because your teams clicker or TD feels that you should sacrifice yourself for their gameplay.

I love some of the more imaginative insults. There was one about a player being too busy licking his own eyeballs rather than playing.  They do make me chuckle sometimes.

Pros

If I'm playing light tanks, maybe the only light tank on the team and get a map like Prok I will talk on my team during the count down, click the map where I am going and say "I am going to spot here, arty pls aim, heavies pls go mid and farm these targets" and I will more often than not get several "affirmatives" I go there, spot the enemy tanks approach and very often they get wrecked, I'm happy, teammates are happy and I will say "Ok, well is empty I am going to push forward and light up rearguards, arty are you loaded?" and sometimes arty will give me their reload status which I think is very very important they do this all the time and I time my run to arty and also I will wait if needs be. Also, I find it useful during tight games where maybe only 2-3 teammates left and we all talk to figure out what we want to do or to defend or attack and from where etc, it can be very useful.

Cons

You guys already know.

It's a team based multiplayer online game, turning chat of is beyond stupid.

Just ignore insults/spam and grow a thicker skin.

I'm sure you have your pros and cons the wrong way round there.

Nothing more annoying than those automated spam chats.  Yes of course you have been spotted, you are halfway down banana road on Himmelsdorf!  Never, ever seen one that was useful.

I've won matches due to having allies write in chat what hit them, from what direction and so on so I consider it quite useful, however the cons are quite huge and my ignore list is slowly but steadily starting to fill up. If it wasn't for the lazy programming of things like no limiter on map pings, the "I've been spotted" etc mod announce spam and the constant profanities it would almost be a pleasant experience to have chat on, now I find it to be more like a necessity, kinda how I feel like driving to work is a game of life and death but a necessity.

I disabled all communications within an hour, including sound, and that was 3 months ago

Just not worth the hassle

That map beep thing drives you nuts and you can't disable it

I'm here to enjoy myself, not be driven to distraction

Chat is useful until you let people use it same with pinging and drawing on the minimap.

Moderate it closely terminate the account of people who persist on insulting players Pinging the map 300 times or writing idiot or similar on the minimap.

In short get rid or the idiots.

If that cannot be done or you are unwilling to do it.

Limit map pinging and make it so that it does not trigger a message in the chat window.

Persistant pinging drives other perhaps important messages off the screen.

Increase the number of options of the radial menu Plenty of mods out there have done this.

You have 6 game messages they can vary depending if the crosshair is over a map area an enemy tank or a friendly tank thats 18 possible messages.

The messages can also be changed depending which tank type you are driving.

Add a shift key you could make that 36 messages.

When chat is used positively, it's really good.  I love those long games that end up being really close and where your team starts talking to each other towards the end of the game to try and secure the win.  I had a really good game on mines recently where both teams were worn down and we reached a stalemate.  I was pinned down by an enemy tank behind cover opposite me so I asked our arty to relocate so as to be able to get a line of fire on him.  Arty duly acknowledges, moves across the map and takes him out.  With their flank now broken we were able to roll them up.  Sadly, that only happens maybe once or twice in a hundred games.

On the other hand, abuse and insults happen in the vast majority of games, which is a shame because I've long past the point of thinking it funny or clever to see someone reply "stfu" when someone else on the team simply says "gl & hf".

I never get that insult..... is that a "you" thing?

Half the insults wouldn't appear if XVM is removed from matches also.

Plenty of longer end games were won via typed communication / tactic rather than relying on the ingame clicks/commands that would of gone the other way if it wassn't used.  Not everyone understands the same language and that is a huge drawback whe trying to communicate intentions in game.

I miss all chat as it gave more opportunity for interaction, didn't like the giving away of positions obviously but they were minimal.  I've been toxic at times in both dragged down by frustration at myself/game balance/team, this game really is like no other I've played when it comes to the negative side off things but there have been some genuinely helpful, good & funny camaradarie.

For me those pro's are cons instead. I think those mods are only useful in team battles, not in randoms. I get tired of players getting spotted every 10 seconds, because they play dumb and their mod spams the chat and distracts me. Partly from playing and partly from messages that MIGHT be actually useful.

In that scenario, what exactly is the difference between (i) you playing against/with other people and (ii) you playing against/with computer bots?
