My first real arty. (not counting the tier 3 and 4 I tried out few battles).

I am using it to get most of the missions done.
Few questions;
1. Top gun 203mm, is it really that bad? (I read a lot of people say don't bother)

2. Is it worth to research engines?

3. Crew skills?
4. Any general tips you can give would be nice too. :)

I don't have this tank but in general I would use xp to unlock the guns before the engine though of course engine/s are needed to help propel you better!

Skill wise BIA, 6th sense, snapshot, clutch/offroad, camo are the most important,  let your aim circle fully settle and I prefer the traditional overhead birdseye view rather than the new arcade one they implemented.

Edit after looking at tanks gg I'd probably go with the 1st faster firing gun, but certainly unlock the other and see for yourself which you prefer, the bigger splash radius is appealing

Snapshot skill actually is applicable here? I thought that was only for turreted tanks!?

From what I experienced so far there is almost zero situations where a better engine would have helped me out. Because by then I am the last one alive. Although reading the bottom threads it seems like the top gun is terrible.

152mm for stun missions.

203mm for dmg missions.

Research everything. Order does not matter much.

Give Mentor to commander so its crew get BIA as fast as possible and then switch it to BIA too.

6th sense is a bit of waste. You will not run away with that thing after you have been spotted.

I have never owned the S-51, but I do play the other tier 7, the SU-14-1.  The middle gun on the SU-14-1 is the stock gun on the S-51.  This is the gun that is the best in my opinion.  I do more damage with it, alpha damage as well as stun/assist damage.  I feel pretty confident that I would choose the same gun on the S-51.

I use 6th sense on all of my artys.  Wouldn't play without it as I find it VERY valuable even in slow tanks.  The other advice given above is all valid in my opinion...especially the part about finding out for yourself what you like the most...everybody is different.

Yes Snapshot skill is useful as it effects any gun traverse that happens though granted it has a bigger effect on turret rotation, it's also useful to use on casement TD's.

In the video below, 4 Tankers & Dog did some detailed testing on the effects of Smoothride and Snapshot.  The video should start at the point in the video where he tests using a Lorr. 155 51.  He doesn't rotate the hull as Snapshot does not have an effect in that situation.  But, as you will see, Snapshot does provide an improvement on arty.
