Although I have 13k battles I’m a heavy tank noob. Only played a small amount down the Japanese line about 3 years ago and had a torrid time (I almost exclusively play lights)

Im looking for some suggestions for a heavy tank at tier 7 or (probably) 8 to finally get this campaign done (only taken me 7 years to want to bother finishing it)

I have no real desire to progress any further than 7 (but imagine tier 8 would be best) as I highly doubt I’ll enjoy it much (would love to prove myself wrong) but I don’t see myself playing heavies except for campaigns.

I’d also like suggestions of a heavy tank that could then get the job done for subsequent campaigns.

Bare in mind I’m going to basically have to learn all new mechanics (hull down, side scrapping etc) as I’ve never really played any tanks that need to do that. So id like a tank as noob friendly (in heavies) as possible.

All suggestions great appreciated although American, Russian or perhaps (need to start a crew from scratch) Japanese would be the easiest for me to obtain.

Thanks.

well i am not that expirianced myself if you look at numbers of battle, but i would go with IS-3, great hull armor nice turet armor and decent gun if u meet tier IX-X on your way. VK100.01P but for me is slow as F snail compared to IS-3

For first campaign... KV1, T-150, T29, Tiger (H/P), VK 100.01 (P) are all ok depending on mission. Probably O-I and O-Ni too, but dunno after last nerfs.

If I had to choose one, probably T29. Might struggle with last mission though.

Thank you for the input so far.

Looking like the T29 is coming out as favourite.

What about the IS? Not good enough armour?

Since you're not planning to progress to high tiers I'd say go with 'murrkans. I'm not a fan of the derpy nature of their guns but a hulldown T29 is like a brick wall that throws a potato in the enemy's direction every now and then, and provided it doesn't get rushed it'll eventually have thrown enough potatoes to rack up some damage.

IS is good but has a completely different playstyle. Instead of relying on the armour you'll want to peek, slam a 122mm shell into someone's general direction and pull back. Not that it can't bounce anything but it cannot do so reliably.

T29 is a beast. But VK is perfect for bouncing missions.

T-150, KV-4 or VK100.01 for damage blocking missions. Any other HT you perform well in for all the other missions.

Personal Missions are designed to persuade the player to run up nations they might not otherwise plan on playing. Sure you can try and force a mission with a sub optimal tank, but the optimal tank for a mission will make most of them trivial.

T29 is a good all-rounder (I have one for doing personal missions in) and will do for many of the missions, as will an IS. But HT-15 will be your problem in those.

Here's a rough and ready list for the STUG missions;

HT-1 = KV-1S or most heavies

HT-2 = KV-1S or most USSR heavies

HT-3 = M6 or most heavies

HT-4 = KV-2 or a USSR with a 122 gun shooting HE at a lighlty armoured enemy

HT-5 = KV-2 or a USSR with a 122 gun

HT-6 = KV-1S or most USSR

HT-7 = T57, AMX 50 - 100, 120 or 50B, any USSR at 8+

HT-8 = IS3 or most USSR heavies

HT-9 = FCM 50T or 50B or IS

HT-10 = IS3 or IS

HT- 11 = Most USSR

HT-12 = T29 or T32, IS3, IS7, or VK45.02B

HT-13 = FCM 50T, T57 or 50B or if lucky most USSR at 8+

HT-14 = IS or IS3 or any USSR heavy 5+

HT-15 = Type 4 or 5 Heavy, Mauschen or Maus (I have the later and did this one first game), VK45.02B, E100, or IS7. There is a thread somewhere on the forum when PM.1 first came out with replays of the lowest tier that HT-15 could be done in. I recall seeing it done in a few tier VIII's but that will be hard to do and require fairly exceptional circumstances, whereas a Maus will do it with ease.

T29 has always been a popular mission tank but a lot of them can be done in pretty much anything.

A lot are like get a kill, get two kills of different types.  They don't really need any specific qualities.

Yeah. It’s the last mission in HT-15 that already has me sweating. I really don’t want to have to grind out a tier 9 or 10 heavy just to do that particular mission. Sounds like the T29 ‘could’ get it done but will require a bit of luck with circumstance. Again thank you all for your detailed input.

i got HT15 done first in T29 (good hull down game with no arty) and with honours later in an IS-2 of all thingd (admitedly a game which went all my way) so tier 7 is do-able

any decent tier 7 or tier 8 heavy will do.

T29, IS-3, VK100, O-Ni or O-Ho, KV-4, 53TP, T32, IS-M

I think I did mine in a KV-3, it's just a question of luck to get all the stars aligned correctly.

Completed the first two HT-15s with the T32. There is no reason why one couldn't complete the first one in a T29 ;) .

The IS is a decent tier 7 HT, but the armor doesn't hold up nearly as well as the T29's.
