I was stood in the conservatory last night, and noticed a magpie fighting with a pigeon. The magpie was getting the upper hand, so like any modern muppet, I grabbed my camera to video it.

The wife was like, "Save him..!"

"Do you know how many views I can get from YouTube with this..?" I replied.

"SAVE HIM".

I put the camera down and chased off the magpie, picked up the pigeon and took him to the house. He was in a rough state.

So popped him in a hessian sack, with some bedding, and food, and left him on the decking outside of the house, thinking if he survives the night, he may be ok.

Well, he did indeed survive the night.

Popped him out of the bag and left him to walk about a bit. He still looks like he's in a rough state.

What do I do now with him ? Shoot him, throw him in the river, leave him for the rats....  ..?

Short term care is a day or two, feeding with bird seed , porridge oats or corn. If they are too cold they won't eat, so room temp is fine. Not much you can do unless you bring it to an animal shelter.

But if you intend to let it go, it needs to rehydrate. Give it a cup(measure) of warm water with a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar during it's stay with you.

I once brought home an injured seagull, it was a big bird and hard to handle, but it survived and I released it back where I found it.....I can tell you now that they are sh*itting machines, the inside of my shed was destroyed.

Good luck!

Still a bit messed up after a day, the animal shelter might be the best place.

If no shelter around, your local pet store might be able to help.

He got food, and water this morning. Sugared, and salted as you suggested.

The wife checked awhile later and he'd gone....

...I hope, to safety.

Cheers for the advice. :great:

Oh, can you eat magpies ?

According to my chinese neighbour, you can eat pretty much anything.

The bigger question is: does it taste well.

You'd need a lot of alcohol to wash that down! ;)

Pigeon pie?

That's what I would do.

Question is, was it a pigeon or a dove?  I doubt a magpie would take on a wood pigeon or a feral pigeon (or rock dove), might take on a small stock/collared dove though but probably only if the dove was already injured.

Gives me a game mode idea for Warplanes......Shoot the Pigeon.

Incidentally - is it still legal to shoot pigeons?

In the UK no.  The general licence which the government had been issuing for the last 40 years was challenged and they accepted it was not legal.
