Simple question... which is the better for a realtive newbie? I get on well with the JagdPanzer IV but have struggled with the Jagdpanther. Which is the better TD to get first?

Thanks again folks...

Because both, and to a degree all turretless TDs, are quite outdated in the current WOT.

The Ferdinand armor doesn't work against same or higher tier opponents and for that armor it got bad mobility. Even lower tier opponent will go through that armor if they've some experience.

The Jagdpanther 2 is faster with a bit more armor in the superstructure but still no turret and mediocre mobility. It's supposed to work hull down but good luck doing that with 6.5° of gun depression.

If you want to play a tier 8 german TD, pick the borsig or the premium Skorpion G. They have the same gun on a much better platform. If you want a tier 8 turretless TD, play the solid T28.

it is simple:

Jpanther 2 has no armor and good speed.

Ferdinand has no armor and no speed.

which one would you choose ?

Noooo, there are good tanks in almost every line in this game. Sometimes the whole line is good, sometimes the tier 10 is bad, etc.

There are no wrong lines, you have the Jgpz 4 which is good at tier 6 and the Jagdpanther which is also good at tier 7. You did the right thing asking here about those two! :)

Everyone did this. Thinking Tiger would be godlike or some other historical tank just to get this kind of response on the forums.

Both are rubbish. JP II is the better out of them.

Does the line get better at Tier 9 and 10? I'm not stat-focussed so don't mind grinding and learning to get there.

Unfortunately no!

The Jagdtiger got a monster of a gun but again, the armor doesn't work and the mobility is bad. The JgPz E100 is the same but with big alpha instead of DPM.

Thanks for all the help. I will elite my JagdPanther and then go spend credits on other lines I'm grinding. Maybe come back to this when I have the inclination to spend some extra time on one of them. I reckon my first proper foray into Tier 8 (outside of Loot box Premiums) should be elsewhere... SU-101 looking best bet.

No worries, keep the Jagdpanther if you don't need the credits. It's a good tier 7 TD.

Here is an idea, if you don't mind, how about revisiting the T-34-85 line or the american T20? :)

They are quite different from each other... I picked JP2 myself, since its much more mobile and is able to relocate. Narrow gun arc means you will break your camo very often though. It's been some time since I had it, but I'd still choose it.

I've been thinking of getting Ferdi, but dunno how it works in current meta (and I already got JP E100 & JT). Jadgtiger is pretty nice, but it has fearsome top gun and better armor.

I guess Ferdi and JT require a bit more from crew too.

That's a weird coincidence... I still have the Jumbo in my garage and was just looking at that and the medium line after it!!

I wasn't good enough for the Jumbo when I ground through it to get to the T-29 but my gameplay is slowly getting better the more I play mediums. Heavies are great but I do like the better all round gameplay from mediums. It seems like mediums teach more about tactics. I have a lot of tanks on the go at the moment and after the x2 each day I am trying to focus on the Cromwell and the P43 lines. But I reckon I might just revisit the Sherman Jumbo and see if I can't put together a decent US medium crew. The T-20 looks like a great tank. Having the freedom to play 3 or 4 hours a day is certainly helping with the grind!!

Not sure why these TD's are being dismissed so much. I can't talk for the Ferdi but take a look at the screenshot and the reality of the JP2 is this is a seriously lethal TD. Firstly, it's T8, so keep that in mind and held against other T8's since in truth they all tend to get shafted by MM but with the JP2, layout out the way I have mine, what you have a fairly mobile unit that has over 3k DPM and one of the finest most reliable and accurate guns I've ever played. Doesn't matter what tier you're playing you do not want to sit out front of something with 500 alpha, a fast reload, 250 pen as standard and if needs be, 310+ pen to call on for something solid like a Japanese SuperH. Not many T8 tanks can match that combo and when other T8 tanks are backed into a corner of a small corridor map and simply haven't the pen or firepower to do anything about the big iron clad lumps of T9 and T10, the JP2 will shred it's way through most and stop them all dead in their advance. Take a look at that side profile, the upper hull housing the gun, that some serious slope and if you can get hull down with a little more angle put on that slope, it's near impregnable to anything it faces. As you can see by the layout, I play mine very actively, take it to the enemy, forget the binos or camo net, consider it more of a limited med that sacrifices a turret in exchange for savage firepower and just play it sensibly at ranges as to not get flanked or tempt someone into rushing at you though it traverses very well. If instead, you were to sacrifice the firepower in exchange for a turret, what you'd have is the Panther2 at tier8... and I don't want to be playing that! I kept it and still play it, don't find it outdated or irrelevant. If you have a ScorpG, fine, it makes more sense to play that since it's a premium and has a turret but even at that, it's still a different playstyle offering and I'd be more brave with a JP2 to push whereas with a paper Skorp I'd be a little more conservative and ranged.
