Does anyone else find it annoying when someone decides to self-appoint themselves as Team Commander in randoms and start drawing arrows on the map telling everyone where to go?  It's not as bad as non-stop clicking but still irritating, especially when the would be TC is pretty clueless.

Never had one, have to manage with click-spammers. What mods are required?

If numbnut has tactical acumen of Mario expert, ignore. If it bothers much, I guess you could delete the mod.

Yet another guy who doesn't know the features of XvM, and thinks it's a feature of the base game.

Arrows are fine, very easy to ignore.  It's the CDCs that annoy me.

Where do you get that idea from? XVM is a common mod, drawing arrows is a common feature, people do it because it's expected to work for a lot of people and it does. Nothing about it not being a part of the base game makes it exceedingly irritating spam.

That said, pinging the map COULD be useful if people used it for what it's designed to do: draw attention to a situation on the map that people need to react to. Instead, it's constantly used to draw attention to a situation on the map that people can't do anything about, such as the positions of allies that whatever spammer doesn't like. The person who's sitting in a poor tactical position, knows perfectly well where they are, and only they can do something about it but they won't, because they've decided that's where they'll go and no pinging will make them move. In fact, it's just annoying for the person in question, and it's annoying for everyone else.

Another forumite recently pointed out the minimap spam blocker by champi mod. I tried it and I highly recommend it, you can change the values of how much people are allowed to spam. I set it to the minimum values because people still can use useful commands such as target <enemy> or Help, which autopings the map. The manual pings? Haven't missed them one bit.

Arrows? Real men establish dominance by drawing phallic imagery on the map. :)

On-topic: I think it's really good for teamplay, anyway. )))

Arrows on maps could prove useful........if used responsibly.

Map sector attention pings could prove useful........if used responsibly.

Bottom line? Blame the people. Yaaaaaaaaaayyyy.....

I wanna just add this: I think it would be really useful to add the Frontline-style map ping into random battles. Clicking a sector works, but it can be a bit inaccurate at times, especially for larger maps, so a pinpoint dot such as the one in Frontline would be much more effective. Right?

I'm not sure whether the arrows can be seen by those without XVM loaded.  Maybe not.  I have vanilla XVM, and have never touched the settings on it.

This question was sparked in what I am pleased to call my mind by a game just now  in which a wannabe TC invited me by arrow at start to run across the field on Glacier in my Pudel and sit atop the aircraft carrier.  I declined the invitation, sniped away merrily, and we won despite my foolishness.  I can't help thinking that if I had followed this brilliant plan I would have been a smoking wreck in mid-field within 30 seconds.

XMQP only works between enabled XvM clients, none XMQP (XvM) users just see one ping on the map.

I often announce where my initial spot will be if I'm the only light tank in the game. Could be very useful especially for arty to pre-aim, but usually they are too busy looking for the red-line...

Is it actually one ping (the end of the arrow) or is it two?

But anyways, never seen them as I don't have XVM. Could be possibly nice to see that feature in vanilla game in organized team battles such in CW. It could be helpful for some but for randoms I wouldn't want to give the players the ability to draw on the map in vanilla. As it's now possible to see the drawings with XVM only, I don't really care about it.

Fascinating to see almost an equality of opinions across the board on the poll.  Not what I had expected.

This was my first attempt at a poll.  Next time I shall do a more nuanced one like:

  • Do you hate arty? (1 option - yes)
  • Do you hate wheelies? (1 option yes)
  • Is the MM rigged? (1 option yes)
  • Is WG deliberately ruining your career and marriage? (1 option yes)
  • Are noobs ruining all your games? (1 option yes)
  • Am I being targeted by Oribatal Mind Control Lasers from Outer Space? (1 option yes)

I think that will give us a sound basis on which to proceed.

You can turn that off in the XVM settings on their page.

Useful information, thanks, Turtle.  No one ever tells me anything.
