In my honest opinion, T-54's were still somewhat relics of the old era, since they still relied a lot on their armor, but one can argue of course.
T-54 was designed to withstand anti tank guns of the late 1940's. When western intelligence found out about its armor, brits designed the 105 mm L7 gun which could penetrate T-54's frontal armor. When hollow charge ammunition and especially anti tank missiles with strong hollow charge warheads appeared, all ordinary rolled steel armor became obsolescent, and so 1960's tanks were designed with very light armor and high mobility. When laminated armor which was effective against hollow charge was invented, tanks again became heavily armored.

Is this the prelude for Tier XI+ vehicles?
Rather pointless to add more trees/branches as WoT is playing itself out to the point it's repetitive.
As I've stated before, Tier XI needs not to have composite armour, ATGMs, etc. As there are already vehicles very much suitable for Tier XI already in the game (Bobject, for instance).
At Tier XI, you'd still have vehicles with RHA as armour. Actual MBTs (T-64 for example).
At Tier XII, enhanced armour would be introduced (still not composites), as per the article (less armour but laminated like the forumites above said).
At Tier XIII you'd finally get composites and at a later stage, ATGMs.
