I was in that transitional phase in that we leant how to use them but also had calculators.

Yeah, I know the kind of pen. We got to use those too occasionally but not in regular class work where we just used pencils. The teacher's desk had a sharpener attached to it. With permission we could approach and sharpen our pencil when needed. Oh those were the days! :P
