Hello,

today in the news journalists mentioned that the Syria army is sending troops to the turkysch-Syria border and showed of a tank being transported. It looked like an M60 to me and the Syrian army have mostly russian tanks. the Turksich army does have M60 so was this news report misleading?

What tank is in the picture? Any help is appreciated.

That is an M60A3 in the image and no, the Syrian army never used these.

No problem at all. :)

You know despite being a very old tank there are still very extensive upgrade packages for it today. Like the Israeli Sabra and the Italian Leonardo.

Iran had a few hundred M60s, though, and they sent forces to Syria. Maybe it was gifted / left behind by them? But since their M60s were from the pre-Revolution-70's, I'm not sure they still have any left in working state after the Iran-Iraq War.

if I am not mistaken the turkish still have a lot of m60s, so it could actually be one of theirs.

Iran still had around 150 M60A1 after the losses in the Iran-Iraq war. These were upgraded locally and called 'Samsam'...

Iran still operates some very old western tanks like the Chieftain (Mobarez) and their locally upgraded M47 (called Sabalan)...

Also Iran locally produces both the T-72 and their own indigenous tanks (Zulfiqar and Karrar).

None of the aforementioned matches the one in that image and Syria already have a lot of tanks. They won't be using a foreign tank which they have no training, spare parts or ammunition for.
