I'm working up the German fixed gun TD tech tree and will soon have to make the Big Choice of Jpanther II or Ferd. What are people's experiences with each, any preference and if so why?

Edit - added a poll

Ferdy = Slow but Armoured

JP2 = Mobile with less armour but sloped.

This thread needs a poll.

Ferdinand, all the way.

No particular reason.

Ferdi is outdated due to powercreep, so, I'd suggest the JP, it's more versatile because it's mobile and due to slopping the superstructure;'s effective armor is better.

I don't have either but Ferdinand has fairly decent frontal armour. Slow turret less TD would be a nightmare to play. So easily flanked and the squishy rear compartment is there to be farmed.

ferdi has quite a massive hp pool, with armor that can block a couple (not something to really rely on tho). gun arc is pretty good and suited for 2nd line support/peek a boom tactics when going together with HT in city and such, camping all game with it is kinda worthless

jp2 is quite mobile, hull armor is non existant, superstructure front is better than ferdi and able to block some higher tiers aswell but not utterly reliable due to mantlet holes, camo isnt the best but workable, could go with MT but its bit more sniperish than ferdi also due to way lower hp pool, gun being good aswell (so far i remember same gun stats as ferdi)

both are fairly good TD, i liked ferdi more due to stupid high hp pool for a TD with some better all round armor

basically do you want to run around being able to switch positions "quickly" or brawl with HT?

IMHO Ferdinand seems the more logical choice as it has a six-man crew (same as Jagdtiger and JPz E 100 so you can move it to the new tank once you're done grinding) and a similar playstyle (slow, strong superstructure, decent frontal armor, good gun arcs).

JPanther II feels like an oddity in that it's a Panther II hull with no turret and the Skorpion gun. Might be fun for some silly shot + ram gameplay but I don't see it as a competitive TD. Also it has a crew of 5.

JP all the way. Speed > Armor.

Neither in my opinion. Stop the grind at tier 7 if you want and play something else.

Pihip got a point there which is the crew compatibility. Both lead to a tank with 6 crew members so what's the point of training only 5?

Upcoming changes could make this line better but we don't know that yet. If the ammo and HP changes affect this line for the better then you can resume the grind. These changes could also make the Grille 15 line better so you will have a choice when they come to the live server.

Ferdi, if you like to camp in a place

Jpanther, if you like mobility

Ferdi - slow, unreliable armour, real.

JPII - not as slow, less armour but more reliable, WG invention.

JPII's superstructure armour in not reliable at all since it got HD model. Gun shield is full of holes, can be hit and penetrated if slightly angled (similar to french TDs) and superstructure is like 30% of frontal armour profile... good luck hiding that huge hull with 6.5 degrees of gun depression.

Meanwhile, Ferdi can hide all his weakspots almost completely if you have some corner. 8 degrees of gun depression is enough to hide most of its hull. If played correctly, Ferdi can take some beating. And with 1.5k HP you can trade really well with same tier tanks.

Key difference is mobility - JPII is faster and more mobile so it performs better in +0/+1/+2 tier battles. Ferdinand is pretty limited and inflexible - if you don't have a corner to work it, you can just sit and trade hitpoints.

Also - Ferdi has the same crew layout as Jagdtiger. And it kinda prepares for its playstyle of sitting in advantageous position and trading. So if you want to advance to tier 9 and tier 10 - play Ferdi. If you want to stop at tier 8 - play JPII (or just buy Skorpion, lol).

Of the two, even with a different crew layout if you want to move the crew up... JP II. Went for the Ferdi on my NA account and it's not that great in the current meta IMO. As personally I loved the mobility trade vs armor. As it made it more flexible in terms of reacting to the map. But ofc you won't bounce as much. Superstructure might bounce a few when top tier. But def not in a +1 or 2 game.

So that's the aspect to consider. As in if you don't mind being late. Or want to be more flexible moving around more.

Jpg II has mobility, simpler to use armour.

Ferdinand armour is actually more effective if you have cover and a brain.
Ferdinand has a bigger gun arc too.
Better gun depression.
Better view range
The right crew setup for the JgTiger and JgPzE100

Well, I reallly like the Ferdi, and thought the JPII was meh. Ferdi armour works if you hide lower front plate and angle in between shots - you can get a lot of bounces off the mantlet that way.

My experience:

Got both, played them at the same time, as soon as the JP2 unlocked the gun, it was shelved, and the Ferdi unlocked the tier 9 with that gun.

Ever since, from the two, only the JP2 sees the light of day while the Ferdi is at the back of the garage under some tarp.

Both decent I played both and kept the JP2 after moving on to the Jagdtiger, I just enjoy the mobility.

As others said the crew is a consideration you need 2 loaders for the Jagdtiger and E100 and so getting a start training one using the Ferdinand could make sense. if you already have a spare German Loader then it doesn't matter so much.

Jagdpanther II.

Because speed and mobility is more important these days.

But if you like slow vehicles with some armour, go for Ferdinand.
