I have the launcher on C: and the game on another drive but that shouldn't matter right?

Click on the cog on the left side, and then on the update menu to see if there are any settings that might block the speed.

Forgot to say that I already changed the max download speed to unlimited, still the default speed shouldn't be that slow so there must be something else at fault but it could have been temporary.

Your ISP might be throttling bittorrent traffic.

I just downloaded new GC yesterday evening, download speed was about 300 kbps. After about 40 minutes error displayed: network error try again. So I started it again and now it downloaded full speed in a couple of seconds.
