One of the interesting things about the game, to my mind, is why tier 4 seems to be so disliked, when it is so full of interesting and effective tanks which can hold their own even against tier 6 opposition.

The Lee and Grant tanks are a classic example.  They are odd tanks, not quite mediums and not quite TDs.  Somewhat speedy, but not very, some armour but not much.

Most players see them as something horrible to endure to get to tier 5, but with a little thought they can be incredibly effective even in mediocre hands

The big question in my mind is whether to go for the US version with its 75 mm or the UK version with its 6 lbr.  Personally I prefer the latter but there is a case for the 75 mm as it can easily obliterate same tiers and lower.

you need a second thread to emphasize your love for this tier almost nobody cares about?

were it tier 3, I could post something constructive.

Yes, the lack of love for tier 4 baffles me, as it's the one in which I do less abysmally than any other

But by all means let us extend to tier 3

The star of the show there, to my mind, as an all-rounder is the French Somua S-35 medium.  Decent speed, armour and gun.  More or less immune to those pesky Pz IC things.

Personally, I'd say the Grant with the 6-pdr.

The penetration, and especially the gold penetration are so much nicer for when you're bottom tier.

Not to mention the vasty improved shell velocities over the 75mm.

If you disagree, then the Grant still has access to the same 75mm as the murikan tank, but with an additional 15 shells to go along with it.

And then there's the issue of view range, where the Grant has 5 more meters for some reason.

Any mediums there are all inferior to the grostraktor. Aside maybe M2 Medium because of it's viewrange, sloped frontal armor and gun depression.

Take a closer look at the Somua S35, you might be surprised

An old favourite of mine is the Pz IVA which belts out 75 mm HE like it's using a drum.  Pretty much the same as the Grosstraktor, I think, except it's free.

You do see a lot of M2 Meds.  One reason I like the Somua is that it mostly shrugs off HE.

Grant all the way. That gun is just very good. And I actually don't mind the platform - the upper plate is actually decent - just use it as an assault gun.

Both nice tanks, but would you compare them with the mighty Duck?

Fair enough.  However, I reckon that tier 4, being generally disregarded, has far more massively OP tanks than you will find at tier 5 and above.

I rather like the Duck but it has to be said that time has rather passed it by and its pen leaves something to be desired.

But the thrill of driving it at 80 kph downhill is something special

Well, pen never really be "good". I agree it struggle against some newer tanks like O-Is, but bouncing off Pz1cs gold clip without really caring is ludicrous.

And, as you said, getting downhill to 60-80km/h and keeping it for a while in a tank so well armoured, never gets old! :D

Like? I honestly don't know. But stuff like marder 38t (?), Pz b2 and T28 F30 come to mind. I remember the T40 being OP, but camo or view range has been nerfed in the past.

Well it still has like 400 better base dpm than a Super Pershing for instance.

There are in fact tier X tanks that have worse DPM than M3 Lee

M3 Lee is a hidden gem if you can utilize it, the trick is to find the proper corners to angle and hide the tumour side.

Solid flanker tank, too many try to snipe with it tho.

Agreed, not a sniper, but an amazingly effective aggressive medium at its tier.  Those guns!

I see that I have 57/58% win rates with both Lee and Grant despite both having poor crews and a drunk commander.

You do see a lot of M2 Meds.  One reason I like the Somua is that it mostly shrugs off HE.

I have the Pz.S35 which is practically the same thing.

It does not shrug off HE, as it can't take them for an extended amount of time. Of which the Gr.Tr. has at least 100. On some cases, the RNG was blessing some of my HE shots with pen, which penetrated it's LFP or that weakspot on the front, which is also shared by the B1/ Pz.B2, causing 175 alpha.

Pz IV A is inferior, as it has no side-skirts,has no gun depression, has faster rate of fire, but cannot aim fast enough, which in reality slows the DPM of the tank. So it's not pretty much the same, it's much more different. Also has less HP. The only downgrades of the Gr.Tr., is that it has a large profile, and is a bit hard to hide. Of course, minus the non-existent armor, at least, at the front. Which is to say, you can side-scrape with the skirts, if you position yourself at an auto-bounce angle, and it's also possible to trick enemies into doing 0 damage trackshots on the drive wheel, although it's a bit hard. Also has 6 crew slots, which means it can train and retrain crews for any German tank.

Quite ironically, the Gr.Tr. is on the sale with 30 premium days on top for a mere 10 €,which for me is an average shopping trip. You should get it and try it out.

and I laughed at them all when matchmaker was still capped at tier 5 for tier 3 tanks.

The only tiers 4 I kept are the t28 with f30 and the ke-ho.

Both are fun in their own way.

But I play them once every 6 months ...

The Chinese tier 4 TD has given me a ludicrously high 60 odd % WR. I think I will keep it even when Ive got 6th sense on the commander and move up to the tier 5.
