After the introduction of double barreled tanks in the test server I started to dig around and see what kind of designs and prototypes there actually were.

The ST-I and ST-II

The soviets made two designs for the ST tank. A single barreled version and double barreled version. It only existed in design, no concepts were built:

ST-II

T-34-3

The Soviets also designed a medium tank T-34-3 which would have been able to "volley fire" with it's 3 guns. No concepts were built:

T-34-3

KV-7 and KV-7-II

They built two concept tanks of a double and triple barreled tank destroyers. KV-7 had two 45mm guns and one 76mm gun while KV-7-II had two 76mm guns:

KV-7
KV-7-II

Then there are some concept art for other Soviet double barreled tanks and arties but those aren't designs, only drawings.

Sentinel

Australians built a double barreled Sentinel. I didn't find any information about this tank:

Sentinel

Rheem Hunter Tank

Americans designed a double barreled anti tank vehicle with two 105mm "rocket guns". I don't know if any concepts were built:

Rheem Hunter Tank

VT-Tank

Germans made two concepts of a turretless double barreled main battle tanks. VT-1-1 had two 105mm rifled guns and VT-1-2 had two 120mm smoothbore guns with an autoloader:

VT-1-1
VT-1-2

AMOS and Mjölner

We have two double barreled mortar systems in current service in Finland and Sweden.

The Mjölner is a 120mm double barreled mortar system on a CV90 chassis. AMOS is more advanced 120mm double barreled system, capable of direct fire up to 1500m and indirect fire up to 10 000m. AMOS can fire a volley of 16 shells with different flight paths hitting the target simultaneously. AMOS has been mounted on CV90 chassis and Patria AMV wheeled vehicle.

CV90 Mjölner

CV90 AMOS
Patria AMV AMOS

Then we have a lot of double or multiple barreled anti tank vehicles, SPG's and anti aircraft vehicles which aren't really "tanks".

Here are some examples:

M50 Ontos with six 106mm recoilless rifles
Type 60 double barreled 106mm recoilless rifle
Koalitsia SV double barreled SPG

EDIT: fixed some of the spoilers and images

Nice post. Really interesting and well written.

To be fair, some of those tanks would be nice addition to the game as premium or, better, as bondshop tanks.

Especially things like the KV-7-2, the double barreled Sentinel or the Rheem Hunter as they fit the game reference age and have 2 same caliber guns. Particularly like this last one as it looks like an overgrown AMX40. :)

The Rheem Hunter tank looks like the blobby cousin of the Duck (AMX 40)

On that twin barrel Sentinel tank, only quickly found info was this: AC3 Thunderbolt with duel 25 pounders

So basically 2 105mm derp? That would be fun as tier 6-7 tank.

Comes with pull-cord action too.

The next logical step for the game is a MLRS as Arty Class

+1 for doing your homework properly.

I've known about the KV-7 and Rheem for a while and I think they could make it into the game now the double barrel lines are being introduced.

I still want the other ELC variants, Even 30 and Even 120. They are ELC's with double barrels.... :hiding::bush::child:

add this one as well then:

Luftvärnskanonvagn fm/43 SPAAG in Strängnäs, this one could be a realistic option in low tiers :D

105mm derp are not that bad, especially at tier 6. It would be a meme tank, with some nice damage potential, but most of the time would deal ~150-200 damage with a double shot. Plus it would have less DPM than the tier 5 105, due to the double barrel mechanics. :)

No, they're still bad because they'd still put hell on any lower tiers they encounter.

Consider WG is likely not working on those tanks so, if they will be implemented, it will likely be after HE reworks and lower tier HP buff.

What I would like to know is: what was the idea behind these monsters?

To hit better? Accuracy by volume? Was the accuracy of the single barrel gun so lacking that it felt ok to accept the disadvantages in terms of weight and crew size?

Usually to add extra firepower to a tank. In the KV-7 case, they first tried with 3 guns, then two and then they were mothballed as it was found out that you get better performance by placing one powerful gun in it, rather then two/three less powerful guns. One of the drawbacks of multi-barrel tanks was indeed accuracy, more guns meant lesser accuracy.

And then a engineer had a brilliant idea; fit 152mm guns in them! While the conversion never happened, these KV-7 tanks were the predecessor of the well known (I)SU-152 tank destroyers.

You can see it in the KV-7 side silhouette:

Quite similar to the (I)SU-152 tank destroyers aren't they?

More info on the KV-7 project

Fun note, above article also mentions a project running at the same time, the T-34-3. This is NOT the chinese one, but a design attempt to fit out a russian T-34 with 3(!) cannons; one 76mm gun & two 45mm cannons to go along with it. A prototype was never build.

Remember, if you can think it, the russians (likely) already tried it in some form with their tanks.

Also, originally, KV-1 was also a multi-barrel tank, but the second barrel got removed for the production model. below a pic of the prototype KV-1

Tho not really a dual-barrel as such. Sherman had it too. 105 derp with a flamethrower.

The joke is, there is no Chinese T-34-3.

Not historically at least.

Everyone seems to forget that the Maus is a double barrel tank.

There was a “weird tank” design competition years ago on the SEA server when I still lived overseas and this was one of the winning entries. Haven’t been able to find the forum post, probably too old. I saved the image because someday I’ll build a model of this :B

Behold, the mighty KV-2²
