I know T-44-100 is the best Russian Tier 8 medium currently in the game, but that thing only appears every now and then and it's as expensive as a Lowe, so I was considering the T-54 proto as an alternative (I have it discounted in the web shop via the Twitch packs).

Is the tank good enough to get the job done, or the gimped speed and bad gun handling doom it?

Also, I would be using my T-54 crew, meaning there would be a small issue - on the T-54 proto, the commander is the radioman, whereas on the techtree T-54, the loader is the radioman (not sure why they don't make the commander or loader the radioman on all 4-crew Russian meds but whatever).

I have been thinking about the same thing myself. I am going up the Russian medium line and already have the T-34-85M. The thing is that since the introduction of crew books you can pretty much just consider your money-making tanks as your crew trainers as well. So, if you think you´ll enjoy the T-54-mod1 enough to play a lot of games in, then sure. The 190 standard penetration will be a problem in terms of making credits though, so you it will take you longer to gain the 2 million credits for a crew book than with some other tier-8 premiums.

I don't need crew books at the moment, my T-54 crew is training their third skill (close to 70% iirc), and the Mod.1 being a premium medium I can just put them there with no retraining.

Well...T-54 proto is worse in almost every way than T-44-100 but is still good.

I don't understand WG, they have T-44-100 with better mobility but worse armor and T-54 Mod.1 with better armor but worse mobility, but for some reason it also have worse gun handling, like alot worse than T-44-100.

P.S: I think I will wait for T-62A to become a reward tank after the tech tree rework and use that as a crew traner.

I was thinking the same. It's not a short grind but with the daily exp bonuses from the prem account it will take what, a week? to unlock T-62A. I was not planning on getting it as Object 140 is better, but since I'm already there, why not?
