What is more important for heavies in general? For example, would u guys put optics or vents on tanks such as the Obj.277, IS-7 and E-100?

I don't run food on my tanks, nor bond equipment, which leaves my heavies with a VR of around 440-445 if I use vents and appropriate crew skills.

Generally speaking you run vents unless you feel that view range is gimping you. That said, optics on IS-7 generally work fine - it's even viable tactic to use it like that in CW because by the time you dig hulldown IS-7 out he will outspot everything.

My general rule of thumbs: for any heavy with 370+ view range: Go for optics, otherwise (IS-3, IS-M etc.) go for vents. On tier 9-10 i see optics as mandatory unless you can get 445m viewrange without it, in that case you can go for vents. on tier 5-6 I go for either vents/rammer/optics or vents/rammer/binos depending on what feels best for the tank.

If its a brawling heavy thats going to be in a built up part of the map 95% of the time I'd go with vents, the overall buff to stats (including view range) is just going to be more useful more often than using coated optics. If you're achieving 440 - 445 already without optics I'd stick with that if I were you.

Depends on the tank

Maybe more important to have the Optics in lower tiers?

I have them on my Tier 5 KV 220 which gives it a modified view range of 381 (Base +35 Optics +11 Vents +8 BIA +7 Recon +10 Sit. Aware.)

This is quite handy for a tank which mostly just bulls its way forward.  On average mine gets 2 spots per game, and recently 4 spots per game

I find the extra view range greatly reduces the chance of being whacked by invisible TDs

On the other hand, I also mount Vents on it, so in this case it's not an either/or decision

For heavies I go with vents, mainly to improve gun handling. I just have the impression the added crew skill vents (and BIA) gives really help to land more of those impossible shots.

You have quoted all tier X tnks. By that stage one would hope that the crew had bilt enough perks thats Vents would be unnecessary and you can use Optics.

On grinding heavies I always use optics as the extra spotting makes the experience gather faster.

This ^ also very true, at low tiers VR still matters

old skool here and I still follow the advice of guys like Zeven, Orzanel and Skill,   you never drop optics (easy assistance=easy xp and credits and end game can be vital)  the only equipment you drop for vents might be vstabs on tanks like 100lt or M48

with the current trash 1.0 bush [edited] maps I am finding this ever more valuable as I so often spot first

I use optics on mous, SQ and IS7. But not sure about the other tanks. Perhaps 278 and 5a can be good with optics.

Not really, it's even more important in higher tiers to have at least 445m viewrange, because you can assume that everyone else has their viewrange maxed. Though on lower tiers good viewrange might appear as a bigger advantage, because many of your opponents will have bad view range, whilst in higher tiers you are pretty much crippled if you don't max out viewrange.

I usually go with Rammer, Vertical Stabilizer and Ventilation , it's more than enough for view range since i'm always using food. I only used Coapted Optics (instead of ventilation) on IS, KV-3, IS-3 cuz i hate to be blind.

For me it boils down to what view range your heavy tank ends up with when you have the typical rammer, vstab and vents setup along with whatever crew skills and maybe with food.

For most top tier heavies, T8+ etc, those heavies can achieve full view range, sometimes beyond full view range or no much off full view range with a top crew even without vents.

Some might need food to get there but it depends where you are at and what way you play also. What I mean by that is, are you willing or unwilling to spend credits on food to get full or close on full view range? If you are willing to spend credits on food, then vents is the choice. If you are not willing to spend credits on food but you feel really low on view range, then it's optics. Other considerations are the crew skills themselves. A player like me would invest in the view range skills instead of other skills first so I would probably be fine vents instead of optics in that case whereas another player might Jack Of All Trades, repairs, ff or something they would feel more important to their heavy tank in which case they would have less view range and maybe need optics. So it depends how a player wants to go about achieving the same end result for view range.

One of the more annoying scenarios in this game is playing a heavy tank with really bad view range on an open map whereby it's just you against a tank who has decent view range mobility and camo which allows him to "kite" your tank by just keeping you at range, popping some shots into you, relocating, rinse and repeating, never letting your lesser mobile, inferior camo and also bad view range heavy tank get close enough to spot him. I can't accept that, ever.

This intrigued me enough to try using Vent Purge and Food on my KV 220, which bumped up view range from 381 to 403, which is more than I had expected.

I seem to have acquired vast numbers of free consumables and directives, none of which I have ever used, so maybe it's time to start.

I think the lowe is the only heavy tank I have optics on since it has such good VR. Though vents is the choice on all my soviet heavies since they are legally blind.

You wont have only city maps, city fights with heavies, so if you have bad view range I would prefer optics instead of vents. I play with food and have good crews on mostly all of my tier 9, 10, but for example I use optics on IS-2, King Tiger ( C  ) , Defender. And it works as often I can spot a tank that would otherwise farm me from distance

I hardly ever use optics in my heavies.

On the other hand I play mediums (with optics) almost exclusively nowadays.

Brawling heavies: Vents (as it boosts everything including reload, repair, viewrange etc.)

Mid/Long range heavies: Coated

For instance I have vents on my IS-3 but I have coated on my VK4503.

Vents there are not so many maps who need viewrange. Most of hts go on towns. If you get outspoted often then you can go for optics, but you have situational awareness and rekon? I'm a ht player and the only tanks I went for optics are the ones I can't put rammer on them
