When you buy it from the premium shop with money, you will get a compensation. The size of it is what changes. If you use a coupon, you will get a full value compensated in gold, but if there's already a discount applied to it, you will get the discounted value of compensation in gold.

When you get a premium tank you own for free, for example tank rewards, you will be compensated in credits.

And forgot to say, as a third, if the tank is extra on the deal, you won't get any compensation (this will be mentioned on the purchase window), for example some bundles that have a tank or tanks attached to them while the main thing you're buying is premium days or something. Usually those are just some tier 3 vehicles but there has been cases of tier 8s given on top of those purchases. So people didn't get compensation from those vehicles.

If you spend money to buy a tank, you get compensation in gold. In most cases the full amount, AFAIK only when you buy a discounted bundle that doesn't contain much "bloat" the amount is reduced accordingly. Coupons don't count as a discounted offer in that sense. And in a few cases when WG considers the tanks itself to be a "bonus" you won't get any compensation (e.g. 360 day PA bundles). Unfortunately WG still doesn't provide an official policy about the whole compensation mess.

If you obtain a tank without spending money (e.g. by doing some missions) you generally only get credits as compensation.
