Thought I understood it but just had a game in my T29 where a KV2 took my remaining 945hp in one shot.  I was facing him head on and was hit on the turret. I thought the damage would be less on armour over 85mm. As the 945hp was all that I had left what was the highest he could have taken me for? I don't use HE much and when recently shooting it a AMX M4 49 ML it failed to do any damage no matter where I hit it frontally.

replay can help but suspect he penned your cupola top side, ~30% chance with HE. he got extremely lucky tho

86 average should not pen anything on the mantle, as a failed HE pen will do half the damage at the most. But that depends on exactly where he hit. As if he hit you in the cupola, that's enough to fully pen with HE head-on. Even the MG port on the hull has a fairly high chance to fully pen with HE. But the mantle or the turret cheeks should nullify most of it. And the AMX M4 49 has more effective hull armor vs the T29 as that don't have an MG port etc on the hull to show. And more effective cheek armor to shrug some of that HE off easier. Cupola is the only "weak" area on that if you have high enough HE pen, as in 60mm +.

Without knowing exactly where he hit. We can only speculate as to why he did that much damage.

Part of the cupola can be penned with HE iirc. On the T30 that's more common.

Recently I figured out that a German 150mm HE shell can pen the machine gun port on the hull of an M46 Patton... Painful to learn in that way ;)

910*1.25=1130 or something like that?

It looks like he penetrated your hull. A KV 2 got 86 mm penetration with HE, so he can penetrate up to 107,5 mm. Your hull armor is 102 mm at its thickest point as far as i know. Seems like that KV 2 had the devils luck...

He hit your drivers hatch with russian RNG.

If HE doesn't pen it does maximum 50% of listed damage.

Also, upper plate of T29 is 102mm thick + angle, so at flat ground it's ~170mm. HE has no normalization so it's more like 220mm for HE to pen.

Thanks Guys. Hard to counter that sort of RNG I suppose.
