Hello, my friend wants to start playing WoT. He told me he has a playstyle preference - speed and big to decent alpha. He intends to scoot around, peek, shoot a few shells and then relocate. I'm stumped as to what line to suggest. French lights perhaps? But then again, lights are brutal for new players I heard.

Not if they have wheels.

Then they are brutal to opponents.

And to common sense as well.

Kinda depends how far up the line you two want to go (stay in mid-tier vs go to Tier X), but I can think of:

Swedish Mediums

Chinese Heavy line

Italian MTs

Russian Mediums (Obj140 & 430U lines)

Obj.277 line

And yes, LTs are pretty brutal, especially since everyone other than LTs tend to rage at you if you dont spot for them personally.

If I may, I'd suggest Meds.  Tier 5, any nation is worth a pop but to get big Alpha, its higher tiers generally.

Lights are ok but the AMX 90mm will take time to aim.  The ones that can zoom and snap shoot tend to be quicker firing with lower Alpha dmg.

To zoom and shoot with reasonable alpha you can't go wrong with the T34/85 in my opinion or the Cromwell although the latter has lower alpha than the former.  I find both a right hoot!

Hmm, I'd recommend Soviet Obj 140 line or Italian mediums. The best part is that both lines don't really have any terrible tanks, so you guys can essentially play anything from T6 to T10 and have fun (although T6 and T7 italian tanks are a bit derpy).

Suggesting a fast and lesser armored line to a newbie players might backfire in the worst way. To play these tanks well you need good map knowledge and a good understanding of the (hidden) game mechanics. Playing a fast line of tanks is probably the most unforgiving and frustrating way to start playing this game.

So maybe...play some low tiers gems for a while first, to see which kind of tanks your friend might actually end up liking. Such as:

- H35 or FCM 36 (French - Forgiving tank with good gun. Kind of slow but its armor actually works)

- BT2 (USSR - Fast tank, fun to drive, fast firing gun)

- Pz. II (German - Fun autocannon tank. Shoot clip and take cover while reload)

- Any spg to get a feel how these work.

I told him exactly that lights are very bad for a new player. Generally, he said that he wants a medium tank that is towards the lighter side, but speed and pure alpha damage are the 2 most important criteria to him. :)

Aren't Italian MTs quite slow? Or do they get faster at higher tiers? I only really got to the T5 :)

BT-2 it is, then? Cant go wrong with russian mediums and the BT-2 is rather easily to unlock and upgrade. If that tank works for your friend the others along the line will probably work out fine, too.

Yep, I'll probably refer him to the 430U line :)

Swedish meds. Tier 7 and up have high alpha guns, low profiles, good mobility, and even armor that can troll higher up to forgive some mistakes. You ofc have other options like the Russians meds with their 100 and 122mm guns on their meds on tier 8 and up. A bit more forgiving grind too perhaps past tier 5. You also have the AMX 30 collectors tanks or the French clip meds. But then you need to get past the French lights that don't forgive mistakes as easily. New polish mediums might be up his alley to going by their current balance ideas from tier 7 and up.

But... early on trying to learn the ropes. Tier 5 and 6 meds still have a fair few derps that can high roll. Inc in the collector's store like the Jumbo with good armor that he gets access to as he grinds along said nation that might be a better option for now.

What line should my newcomer friend go with?

I would say quite thin and no more than 3 inches in length till they become accustomed. :girl:

Just give him something Soviet, it's most forgiving.

Whatever medium line or line with fast heavies, like t-10/wz111.

Just make sure to tell him not to adopt the derp idiocy from low/mid tier, i don´t need to see more idiots in a t-43, t20, m26 (etc) equipped with a howitzer.

Its a sovi...russian game. The answer which tanks to choose should be obvious.

Amx 12t. is the best tank in the game in my opinion, I loved it as a noob and I still love it :) Fits the requirements quite well, not the easiest to play necessarily but tier 6 is not that punishing. Italian mediums as well. Russians are boring imo especially the ones with no alpha damage.

I would go with two different lines, maybe one line without armor and another one with armored tanks like IS-7 line. 60TP might be a good line as well, at least popular among newbs, big alpha traded for mobility. If you go up two USSR lines at the same time you get bored to death, at least I did. 140 is ultimately boring line, just full of solid performers with workable armor, gun and mobility, nothing special.
