Is it just me or does it feel like the majority of maps are poorly designed? 70% of the map is never used for the first 10 minutes of the game until people get bored and start pushing into death traps. Whoever gets bored first loses, that's basically my experience with World of Tanks.

Yes. Although its a feature more of map size and 15×15 teams. With this many guns on the map at the start of the game, most aggressive moves, especially when not co-ordinated, will be punished. It was a revelation to me in the brawl mode (7×7) that you could dominate games and make tactical aggressive early moves which work - which meant I think this mode is actually the best they have come up with.

Generally, maps (in all shooter type games) would be designed to have lines of fire.  This immediately has a consequence that certain areas of the map are inaccessible unless a certain strategy or event occurs.
