Everyone just hyped the tortoise especially some youtubers/streamers and now being top of the three i decided to get it. So why am i dissapointed. Well, take at look this image, Tortoise is that type of tank that has armor against standard ammo, but automatically turns into a light tank when 2 key is pressed.

left with standard ~250pen - Right with Heat ~330

Capture.JPG

This is my main issue with world of tanks, the difference between standard and gold ammo is like ground and sky. What is the purpose of having armor when 2 key pretty much turns into a light tank almost every tank?  I tried even to angle it, but no chance.

The cupola is enough of a big weakspot and not everytime we have cover to hide it, everyone can hit it 75% of times, but well if we want 95% change just press 2 key and aim at the center.

For me this pretty much killed the joy of playing the tank, only few decent battles i had in this tank was when standard ammo was fired, but still they managed to hit my cupola.

T95 at least has decent armor against gold.

What did you expect turretless TDs are arty food and / or HP pinatas.

To be fair at Tier IX/X, a fair number of tanks have 330 (or higher) HEAT.

Mind you with the Tortoise, isn't really about sitting there and expecting to block damage like say the T95, it's about out trading your opponents because of your insane DPM. It's a much more comfortable tank than the T95 Tbh in most situations, even if the latter has more effective armour. You can get some disgusting farms just triple+Ring into folks.

If you're going to sit in front of tanks you have to expect to be penned. The armour is good, nobody ever said it was impenetrable.

That said you have the alpha and DPM to out trade anything you do find in front of you.

Don't forget that if they do pen you, you've got a considerable HP pool to weather the storm.

Angle that over a ridge, check out the armour now.

Plus as someone else said, I dont like sitting in front of a tortoise regardless of how good my HEAT shells are.

Best indicator is to see what you need to get a MoE which oddly I checked last night, it is something like 2100 just for the first mark. Most other tier 9 TD's dont get close to 2k.

The weak point is quite troll and as it is on the side of the tank it gets harder to hit if you wiggle. Also the Tortoise has a great gun arc so you can angle the lower plate which makes it more effective.

One of the advantages of buying a tank purely because you like the name Tortoise, as I did, dissapointment is impossible! :)

edit: it was even more fortuitous regarding the Badger!

With the gun arc and depression, I'd presume you would only need to blame yourself if they can shoot you frontally as in the tank.gg screenshots with whatever ammo.

Its amazing tank, I would choose to face any other T9 instead of Tortoise from my expierence. Crazy DPM plus armor. Even cupola is hard to pennetrate! Just choose the right flank and not an open space

I was disappointed the first day of release. The talk was it has strong frontal armour with a small weak spot, and I liked my AT15a. But this paper tiger was damaged with every shot made on it, the T95 is the tank this was made out to be.

I always get nasty flashbacks when I had to brawl a Tortoise with a Char Futur. Nothing penned with HEAT, nada. Not even the cupola on the top. Tortoise is a nasty tank, and if you can't out DPM it, or outflank it, you're as good as dead.

Ultimately any tank than can't relocate at a reasonable speed is destined to be frustrating. I've never played the tortoise, but am sure it's a blast when you get into a good position and your team is slightly dumber than the enemy. The rest of the time, not so much.

It's an "in your face" DPM machine. When I play mine I don't mind taking an E100 hit as you eat them up during their reload.

As for the armor? Well, you're too late there. As that was nerfed ages ago to be weaker. Before that nerf it was actually rather capable of bouncing the odd shot.

Poor results in mine

But my premium buys remind me of the old joke about the Irish farmer who sold his pig at the market:

"Well, I didn't get as much for it as I thought I would, but then I never thought I would anyway"

First rule.Whenever there is even a rumor of a slow tank with weak lower plate, stay away.

I cant believe  people are so naive.

Lower plate defines frontal armor. This tank has no armor in reality.

You have armor, you have DPM, you have gun dep, and you have decent gun arc and still complaining about the armor? I mean, sure it's annoying, but no one would ever dare to peak against it when it's loaded. And once they do, they're going to say "Oh sheet".

Keep in mind that while the T95 & Tortoise are both armored T9 casemate TD's, they play rather different. T95 is a solid bunker with a slow firing boomstick. Tortoise is less of a bunker, but trades it for one solid gun that can rapid fire & permatrack tanks + a rather wide gun arc for a casemate TD.

With a T95, you don't want to be caught in front of its gun as long as it didn't shoot. Once the T95 shoots tho? You can roll out, aim at a weakspot & roll back into cover before he reloaded (17 second reload). The Tortoise however offers no such luxury when fighting it. It fires every 6-7 seconds, so chances are its going to shoot you, perhaps twice if you try aiming after rolling out cover.

Keep in mind that even in armored tanks you shouldn't rely on armor alone to save you. It will rarely work like that as. Rather combine the armor with the environment to make more use of it. Hills/slopes to use the gun depression & strengthening the armor. Obstacles along with the gun arc help too.
