I've bought KV-5 last year, tried to play it, .. no go.. it's a pinata ... anything goes through it.

It supposed to be a Tank with Armor, but at this moment it's a tank without armor.

Those two boobs are hard to hide, people pen through them very easily.

Is there a secret how to play this beast?

Exactly. Do that, all the while, hiding the R2-D2 weakspot.

Also, pray that the enemy is not shooting gold at you.

Angle, hide R2-D2, and maximise your mobility where possible. While ramming is memeworthy, a mobility build also allows you to fight tanks you can actually bounce shells from, and penetrate with your puny little gun.

I went the other way with mine, I use the Improved hardening and spall liner and made it hard to kill. It has nearly 2k hps so even when penned it takes time to whittle down and its alpha is bad but it's dpm is good so I find I can usually beat any other t8 heavy ( apart from defender ) 1 on 1. I've got my wr to 59% playing solo, 2 moe it appears to be working.

I haven't played it in a while, but I preferred to play it as a medium tank or (when facing tier 6s and 7s) just roflstomp them. Tier 6s and 7s struggle more to penetrate the KV5, the hp pool and high dpm of the KV5 allow you to deal a lot of damage before enemies kill you.

There is an interesting post about the KV5 in the newcomers forum, you might get some ideas on how to play it and kit it out.

I'm running mine with Improved Hardening, Turbocharger and Additional Grousers. It comes with the highest health at Tier VIII, near-indestructible tracks, and can safely exceed 40 km/h consistently.

played it this summer. Expectations were low but i as surprised how well it worked for me. VS tier 9 and some t8 i played like support tank (sometimes played it like a heavium) vs some t8 and lower tiers played aggressive. As super heavy this tank is quite mobile (and with new eq it cant be even better) also has great rof. Also must say armor works quite well (of all my tier 8 hv only Mutant and Chrysler have better numbers). And i never tryed reverse angling, also very rarely involted myself in those corner dogs fights:), if you push you push face to face if you support you track or flank. To be honest i think this tank is best from first generation prem tanks. Better even then type59 (well i might be wrong here since i didnt tested that tanks with new eq but still). At the end i ended with better wr and survive ratio then my average in it. All in all i think this tank is solid 7.5/10, all you need to do to, wisely decide when you can be a brawler and when you need to support.

I played 1800 games in mine before WG messed with the MM and I had a 53% win rate in it

I seem to remember that the trick was to angle it properly which allowed a lot of bounces, keep moving, and use its high DPM to bully.

Rams didn't come off often but when they did they were spectacular, and they were always a mobilising threat.  No one wants to be rammed by a KV5 at speed.

It has some secret advantages: i) it's now rarely seen; ii) the weak-spots are not that weak and are harder to hit than enemies think, especially at range; and iii) it is a lot faster than people think.

Played a game in mine now as an experiment and it was a handy win.  Blocked 3200 so I wouldn't say it's a total piñata.

That was with old equipment of Rammer, Spalls and VStab.  There are probably better option s now.

Blocked:

  • 2 from VK100.01P
  • 2 from VK75.01K
  • 2 from Charioteer
  • 2 from SU130PM

Second game just now was also a handy win and blocked 2850 and killed an O-Ho

Skorp G unable to pen a "tank without any armour".  Strange that

Plenty of assisted damage by tracking Heavies that found it hard to pen me.

All in all I'd say that it was still fairly effective at Tier 8, maybe less so at Tier 9

Blocked:

  • 2 from KV-4
  • 1 from O-Ho and 1 other HE that did only 53 damage
  • 1 from Guard
  • 2 from Skorpion G

You dont play it. Mostly you will get gold spammed and, if opponent team has really bunch of players, who know tanks well, you basicly will get pretty ripped. If premium shells wouldnt be almost like new standart, KV-5 would be a good tank.

Pretty much the same build. Except I use IRM and Rammer instead of spall liner. The perma-tracking potential is real.

KV-5 is a meme tank, you play it for the lolz, because of it's massive weight and the ability to go over 40 downhill, it's one of the best ramming tanks, but it lacks against most same tier heavy tanks, so yea, just press "battle" and hope for good MM. It can bully tier VIIs and VIs but pretty much this.

KV-5 is a meme tank. You don't play it seriously. And I am serious when I say that.

You are clearly not serious.

Everyone who claims this tank cannot be played seriously is either biased or just haven't managed to get a stable 60% WR on it outside of platoons.

You can't have a hive mindset when you discuss things like this.

Yes it has great ramming potential, but it doesn't mean you can't have great games in it, only because of your assumption of its' objective ''limitations''.

It's by far better than IS-6 which people play so much.

There are many situations in which you can exploit enemy mistakes with the KV-5.
