thank you for the material, my work always fails with the lack of sources. need patterns or ideas, pictures or examples but most time I dont find what I search for, especially out of this time. my current sources were the greatly made patterns of Metal Gear Solid 3.

Tank skins are client only side.
So you are the only one who sees the skin.

I cant find the World of tanks folder where is it? I downloaded some skins. Is the folder online in my picture or where?

On my computer the path is C:\games\World_of_tanks_closed_beta\res\vehicles\'side'\

If that doesn't turn up anything, do a search for .dds files. That should help to locate the folder.

As an alternative, if you have a desktop shortcut for WoT, right click on it and open its Properties menu. That'll give you the link to where the shortcut path leads (which will be the WoT directory)

i think it's just a shame that a custom skin doesnt appear to everybody. It would be nice if a user specific skin couuld be set up. But maybe thats something the developers might do once the game goes live.

The problem is that each skin is a couple of MB, for 30 players all on one game that ends up being nearly 60MB downloaded just for one match, you might get occasional overlap, but that's not so common.

Good skins have the same size as the normal skin so that doesn't count for your argument.
Although if people want to choose from different skins for their tank that would increase the game size.

I was just asking another beta tester how to get started with skinning.

You have provided a very nice guide for beginners like me that have no clue and feel that we will never be able to do this.  You have given me hope and I feel like I can do this now.

I really, really, appreciate your time.

Thank You leofwine   :Smile_honoring:

Thanks for your replies :) Now I have a little time on my hands at last, I will be looking to make a small 'decal/text' tutorial to whack on to the end of the OP - just to give a hand with adding Divisional symbols, tank names, font sites and so on, so stay tuned. And I'd just like to reiterate an earlier post of mine;

Quote

If anyone does have anything they wish to add to the F.A.Q, or any 'skinning' tips or any useful tricks in Photoshop or GIMP, please, please, please do post in the thread and I'll update them into the OP with credit.

Tsk the one thing I didn't put an FAQ for...

As the skins are all held on your computer, the skins you have in your WoT skin directories are only visible to yourself. There is currently no way for others to see the skins you are using (unless they've downloaded the same skin and are using it, but then you would not know that)

is better you download the DDS plugin for PS, they dont have it on new versions

http://developer.nvi...ds_plugins.html

is much better than use a converter, and its faster

Just a FYI, the PS plugin for DDS files converter also works for Paint Shop Pro (I'm using PSP8.)  It goes in the PSP's plugin folder and works pretty good, except when saves kinda lags a bit lol.  Course still new to photo editing software so not too enthusiastic to get into bigger programs like Photoshop or GIMP yet (even though I have heard that GIMP is pretty simple to use =/.)

Is there a way to make a skin less shiney? The IS never looks right for me.

Edit the SM file. Roughly put, bright areas reflect more light i.e. become more shinier. Dark parts reflect less light. Pure black means it doesn't reflect light at all. Pure white means that it'l practically glow.

Quick and dirty way is to just open up the SM file and adjust curves/levels or the very rough way by adjusting overall brightness/contrast. If you're not happy with just certain parts you can dodge or burn those areas or paint in the value you want yourself.

Thanks! I was hoping it might be that easy.

Edit: Worked perfectly!

For all people who are searching for historical schemes look here.
There are paintings and markings posted by Bison and they give a lot of information about what paintings and markings are used on different tanks.
Just check it out.

Cool, they even have the disc pattern panther. I've been meaning to do that one but haven't got any good references of it.
