After buying WoWs Mega Santa boxes and being extremely disappointed and then reading/watching this thread https://forum.worldo...omment=3716827

...I would advise everyone to be cautious and wait and see how WoT values its customers, let someone else be the Guinee Pig.

WoT lootboxes aren't programmed that way. It's not guaranteed that whatever tank you get is the FIRST one on a list. WoWS lootboxes are a mess tbf

This.

I play World of Warships and have never bought loot boxes there because the potential value is so random - one box yelds only one item, and then there's the "shortlisted premiums first, then garbage premiums, then decent, then the actual good ones" in that order. There are people on the subreddit who have spent about 1k euros before seeing something good...

Hopefully the Christmas WoT crates will stay the same as they have been so far, they sell like hotcakes so why should WG change them for the worse.

Both games' teams are pressured to make more money from as little rewards as possible. Eventually theyll start copying the WOWS scam.

Wouldn't surprise me. Let's hope it stays the way they are right now.

I would advise to be cautious for ANY money spending for this FRAUD game.

If someone has genuinely spent 1K Euros on boxes they need their head examined.

Examined by a partner at a wealth management fund who can advise them of better ways to dispose of their vast wealth?

Because one can only assume a player able to casually pay 1k euros into World of Tanks has money to burn on fund management fees?

I cannot now go skiing until at least 20th January 2021 (*edited*), so the money I would have spent on that over New Year and early January 2021 I will still have, but I doubt War Gaming will get that level of spending from me.

It's called a gambling addiction/gambling disorder and these people may indeed require professional help. If Wargaming can't be convinced to ban lootboxes entirely, then I hope they at least take action to prevent compulsive spending.

Investment strategy.

1. ........these never go out of fashion and will bring style and class to any ski rack outside a cafe while you sip your hot chocolate.

2. If you're going to buy boxes, buy a lot, and buy early. Not because you might win anything. But you get the XP and credit boosts for the longest time. No point in getting to 50% on the last day of the promotion. Then don't buy any more.

If you are after gold, credits and the game perks from decorations then Loot boxes do give value for money, but you have to spend a good deal of money to get the full amount of perks. For the tanks, well some of them if you already had them add to your credits, but you have to lucky to get the never released before ones, and quite often throw money away if you already finished the garage and book for a win of one of them.

Last years I've been lucky with the new tanks, but I spent more money than maybe was a good idea too? This year I don't know if I will or I won't and thats all down to money and what if fears of Covid lockdowns that ruins the UK economy.

The quickest way to make a small fortune is to give us a large one to manage.

“Once in the dear dead days beyond recall, an out-of-town visitor was being shown the wonders of the New York financial district. When the party arrived at the Battery, one of his guides indicated some handsome ships riding at anchor. He said, ‘Look, those are the bankers’ and brokers’ yachts.’

‘Where are the customers’ yachts?’ asked the naïve visitor.”

If they have the disposable income to afford that, that's their choice to do so (and also their problem in case they don't get anything valuable even after paying so much).

Their choice indeed.  Some people will pay that for a pair of trainers.

This has always been the case for World of Warships Santa boxes of all sizes - ever since the very original incarnation, there was a 'shortlist' of ships that would drop from the boxes themselves. In addition, World of Warships has an anti-duplication mechanic built into its system (unrelated to the Santa boxes), which means that if you were about to get a ship you already own, you reroll for another; in the case of Santa boxes, if you were to roll for a ship you already own, you instead reroll for a ship from a much bigger pool. This has never been the case in World of Tanks, which has no anti-duplication mechanics, and you may therefore receive multiple identical premium tanks from the same batch of loot boxes (eg. several E 75 TS from last year's) with the second and each subsequent one becoming a compensation in the form of gold equal to the tank's value instead.

Another key difference is that every previous Christmas loot box incarnation in World of Tanks has virtually guaranteed results in terms of value (eg if you buy $10 of boxes, you can expect at least $10 of goods in gold and/or premium time) whereas in World of Warships they have always been random, dropping stuff that is subjectively crap (eg if you buy $10 of boxes you're almost guaranteed to not get $10 in gold or premium time, but instead a bunch of flags and camouflages). While it is possible this might change this year, if the September loot box debacle was any indication, there's no guarantee that the system will change in the first place.

They could change the system this year, but again, the core differences of the games make it highly unlikely:

  • Both games' loot boxes drop vehicles (tanks or ships) from a shortlist.
  • In World of Tanks, if you have the vehicle, you get its gold value credited to your account; in World of Warships, you instead roll for another, almost-random vehicle, which is highly likely to be crap unless you already own all the crap ones.
  • In World of Tanks, you can traditionally expect gold, credits, and premium time (in addition to holiday ops decorations) with gold being almost guaranteed. In World of Warships, you can instead expect flags, camouflages, coal, free XP, credits, and less commonly gold and premium time, with flags and camouflages being almost guaranteed.
  • In World of Tanks, you can traditionally buy only buy one type of loot box (in several flavours, each dropping different decorations). In World of Warships, you can instead buy small, medium, and large loot boxes, that have different drops, different drop rates, and different prices.

In short, the two systems are only similar in that they offer seasonal loot boxes that may both drop premium time, vehicles, or gold; the similarities end there.

This is highly unlikely. For starters, the two teams are very different; one was traditionally based in Minsk (I believe they relocated to Ukraine earlier this year?) and the other in Saint Petersburg, in a previously-independent subsidiary company that Minsk has little direct control over. In addition, whether or not something like the "WoWs scam" (it being more of a case of very, very misleading advertising) works in World of Tanks highly depends on the tolerance levels of the World of Tanks community, which has very different whales to that of World of Warships (which notably tries to capitalise on its collaborations with franchises like Azure Lane, Haifuri and Arpeggio, the fans of which being known to be VERY eager to whale for their favourite waifus).
