I've scraped up about 75,000 free exp from a lot of fun with my M7 Medium tank. I feel now is a good time to put it to use.
I've also recently purchased the BDR G1B (I'm trying to get the AMX M4 1945 as soon as possible.) I could chuck out 33,600 or so free exp and skip this tank completely, but then I'd be stuck with an even bigger grind through the ARL 44.
Which tank is more painful to play? In my opinion, grinding the B1 was painful enough.
Any ideas?

Research the modules on the french tanks. It will make the grind easier and more fun
BDR and ARL are nightmares at stock...

Uhh...why?
Buying the modules just adds more exp to be ground out again trying towards the upgrade.
I understand you're trying to make the grind less painful, lol, but I'm trying to bypass as much of the grind as possible.

-If- you are really intent on skipping one of these tanks..then i would say skip the ARL 44 (mainly because you have the BDR G1B already: also the ARL is more expensive to buy, higher tier etc).
If i may give you a piece of advice, and this is based solely on my own experience with these tanks, even if you are intent on doing this: research the Maybach 230 P 45 Engine and the 90mm F3,on the ARL 44 with free xp because you really(!) will need them when you get to the AMX M4.
You will need to research tracks on the AMX M4,however,in order to mount, basically, anything (if i recall correctly) but at least you will be able to upgrade just a little after that if you have these 2 items unlocked..and you really will not(!) like the stock gun on the AMX M4 at tier 7.
In any case: Good luck whatever you decide to do.
Edit: just have to voice my own oppinion here,to OP: You are shooting yourself in the foot by rushing for the AMX M4 (1945)..it has no(!) gun depression..the same choice in guns as the ARL 44..it has worse armor than the ARL 44..and if you start showing up for tier 7 battles in a stock AMX M4 you will be a serious problem..for your own team.It is your choice, off course, but a seriously bad idea.Really bad idea.Really!

Not sure why you want to grind to the AMX M4. It's a peice of junk. It can't compete with an IS. Tiger 1 trashes it. And that's with the best gear. If you skip that stuff to get to it, you're going to have a slow, paper-made, bad gunned 'tank'. You should pick up the best 90mm gun on the ARL 44 first (the 212 pen) so that you have a good gun on the AMX M4 at least. Then play the ARL 44 for awhile to research the M4. It's more fun to play than the AMX M4.

I would research the ARL, and dump the BDR, as I thought it was a POS. The ARL, for me, wasn't that bad, when you have the tracks, engine and 90DCA45, just forget the 105.

I much prefered the ARL44 to the BDR1. I quite enjoyed my time with the ARL. The excellent penetration of the top gun for a tier 6 and the good gun depression help to make this a good enough tank.

A tank upgrade without some modules from the tank before is often worse then it.. so youre not bypassing anything you just make your later grinds much harder.
Ok if you really want less grinding more action research all modules on ARL44 (warning grind involved) ignore 105mm and skip as much from AMX M4 1945 as youre able to, then you get a decent AMX 50-100 and your first revolver if that is what you want.

I skipped the BDR halfway through. I'm having fun on the ARL 44 stock-ish now.

m4 1945 is the first decent french heavy
it is true that i have skipped a lot of BDR and ARL modules with free xp BUT:
BRD grind is not a real nightmare, at least you can unlock quickly the radio and the 90gun, then its only 29k XP for the ARL, honestly it is "doable"
However when it comes to ARL44... better keep your free xp for this one:
-engine: you badly need it (you will use it also on m4 1945) thats 23k xp...
-90dca gun: to get it you need 6k xp (turret) + 90 F3 gun (16k xp) + 23k (90 DCA gun) = 45k = unlocking M4 1945 almost
i have unlocked the previous before getting the m4 1945 but perhaps it is worth unlocking turret + m4 and go directly to m4...

IDK but both those tanks are great with their respective top guns...
IMO I would skip grinding top gun (and tracks + turrets) for them, then advance to higher tank naturally.
Both those tank are awesome IMO, again - with BEST GUN

Thats the funniest thing i've ever heard - Great and awesome are the polar opposite of what they are.. trust me.
Neither tank is remotely good with anything put on them. Both are grinds and a total pain in the arse to play - they may become better in the next patch when the matchmaking gets altered for them. I'd gladly take on either of them with any other same tiered tank in game!
Personally, (and ive ground the whole twatting line) the easiest to get through is the BDR cos of the lesser xp required, so i'de probably skip the ARL purely for the extra time it will take!
Good luck... cos its a horrible grind!

Skip BDR.
Then Fully kit out your ARL, It makes profits on my standard account so its a keeper for that reason only.

I have been through all the french heavy tank grinds and I must say ARL44 was the best of them.
B1: Slow, undergunned, thinly armoured. Hell was born from this.
BDR: Slow, undergunned and thinly armoured. Pure hell.
ARL: Relatively fast, good front armor, decent gun, thinly armored turret makes sure u only use excellent depression to get shots out, not to stay in hull-down position.
AMX: Fast, thinly armored from all sides and horrible gun depression doesn't allow you to used curved 100mm turret front. The gun is the same as that of the ARL but with better aiming time and reload.
AMX 50: The holy grail of the whole tree.
I recommend you skip the B1 and BDR, research the top engine with the ARL, grind the modules on the M4, then use whatever free xp you have left to quicken the research of the AMX50

ARL has to be a keeper but make sure you grind it properly and get the crews to 100% its one of my most inaccurate tanks i ever had in game so be careful when shooting.

EVERYTHING before amx50 series is total and utter crap for a multitude of reasons, currently halway to amx50-100 and i dont have any xp to spend soooooo
i just have to suck it up i guess (might go mental on amx m4 though).
The BDR with 90mm on is only half bad i must admit thx to friendlier MM (sort of a mini KV if you will)and i made desent cred/xp with it.
There is no easy way around the grind/spending free xp though since you MUST have engine and long 90 mm gun on amx m4 to even bother entering in a battle.
